I groaned with each thrust, fisting the sheets, and fighting off my budding orgasm. But when his fingers found my clit, it pushed me over the edge. The climax washed over me followed by his.

As I lay in his arms, I watched Devin struggle to keep his eyes open. I caressed his cheek and played with his short, stubbly hair. “You were right about Blake Carlton,” I said, kissing his rough cheek.

Devin opened his eyes. “Of course I was right. What happened now?”

“I met with him. I wanted to ask him about Harrow’s article and if he was behind it.”

“And he denied it, of course.”

“He denied it, but I wonder if someone else is behind it. As much as I was sure it was him, after talking to him, I think it’s someone else.”

“Who?”

“That I don’t know. Maybe Tanya?” I’d told him all about that encounter after it had happened.

“That would be pretty nasty of her. So what specifically was I right about?”

“Blake being superficial.”

“And how did he prove it?”

“I set him up. I told him how uncivilized you are.”

Devin laughed. “Well, you weren’t lying.”

I smacked his chest half-heartedly. “He fell for it and went on about his little Monaco parties and how he and I came from a different mold from anyone else.”

“Predictable.”

“He tried his little trick of taunting me with your exes again. Told me to ask you about Paige.”

Had I imagined the way he froze? “Paige?” he repeated uneasily.

I propped myself up to look at him. “Another one of your ex-girlfriends, I presume?”

Devin shook his head slowly. “No, not a girlfriend.”

“Who is she?”

“No one important,” he said as if in a daze.

I felt bad bringing it up, but I also wanted to be honest with him. We’d agreed to be honest with each other. “He’s just trying to stir up shit,” I said. “Promise me something?”

“I’ll promise you anything.”

My heart fluttered. “Promise me you will never be like him. Not just the gossipy stuff but the classist shit. Promise you will never look down on other people no matter how much money you have. And don’t be tempted by the yachts, private airplanes, lavish parties, etcetera. I’ve never lived that way, and I don’t want to live that way now.”

“So I suppose that private plane is out of the question?”

“Yes, completely.”

He kissed me on the nose. “Deal.”

He pulled himself out of bed and quickly showered. As he dressed, I watched him.

“Must you watch?” he asked.

“Think of it as a striptease except you’re putting your clothes on.”
