His face turned a light shade of red. “Stop it,” he said.

I couldn’t believe that I’d made him suddenly so bashful. “But you’re so handsome.”

He jumped onto the bed and tried to pull the covers from me. I fought valiantly, laughing, and he finally gave up. He hopped off the bed and quickly ran a hand through his hair and inspected his teeth in the mirror.

“I’ll be back in about an hour. Leo is going to kill me for being late.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Devin

Icouldn’t keep Paige a secret any longer. The whole situation was eating me up. That asshole Carlton had told Luna about her, and he was definitely behind the man who visited Natalie and my parents, that much I was sure of. In way, it was a relief. If it had been Maria Morelli, I wasn’t sure how Luna would react if she found out.

Part of me wanted to confront Carlton, expose him to Luna, but I had to play it cool. That meant finally telling Luna the truth about Paige and Natalie.

That also meant she had to meet my parents.

I made my way to the hotel’s boardroom for my meeting with Leo. I’d expected all the team brass to be there, but it was just me. I poured some water from the pitcher on the table and sipped it slowly. My stomach was doing flip-flops while I waited for Leo and whoever else to show up. To distract myself, I texted the PI.

It has to be Carlton. He told Luna about Paige.

The PI texted me back moments later.

Yes. From what I’ve gathered, he’s behind it. Do you want me to continue working on this?

I stared at the text for a moment. What for? I had my answer. And once I told Luna the truth, Carlton had no leverage over me anymore.

No. Send me the final bill. I’ll pay it right away.

I slipped my phone into my pocket when Leo entered the room in his signature perfectly tailored suit and slicked-back hair. He sat across from me, his dark brown eyes staring at me emotionlessly. He didn’t even crack a smile.

“Hello, Devin.”

I sat up straight, trying to exude confidence I was sorely lacking. “Hello, Leo. How are you?”

“I’m fine. So about today.”

Shit, was I being sacked? And then it hit me. Were they going to replace me with Pedro Martinez? It wouldn’t faze them one bit to pay me out my contract and put Martinez in my place. Why hadn’t I thought of this sooner? I was so busy chasing down Carlton and his vendetta against me, that I’d missed the bigger picture.

“How long have you known that Carlton was going to drive for Perez next year?”

Okay, I hadn’t expected that. I took a much-needed breath. “Two days. Luna told me after the race in Vienna, but until then, I only knew the rumors.”

Leo frowned now, obviously unimpressed with my answer. “You would like me to believe that your girlfriend didn’t tell you sooner? That she didn’t once ask your opinion or confide in you?”

I put on my most serious expression. “I don’t discuss Russo with her, and she doesn’t discuss Perez with me. When Sara made me sign the gag agreement, it was made very clear to me what was at stake.”

Leo scowled. “I was hoping that you and I could have a breakthrough today, but it seems we are at an impasse.”

I so badly wanted to say something sarcastic, but now was not the time. “Luna and I keep our professional and personal lives separate, Leo.”

“And yet you aren’t very careful around her.”

Now I was thoroughly confused. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I’ve been told that some of our new engine modifications have made their way over to the Perez team. You know, the ones you were testing in Manta last year. How did that happen?”
