We were sitting together at the top of the stairs, Devin’s arm around my shoulders. “Don’t you ever wonder about her?” I asked. I’d gotten ahold of my emotions now.

“Not really. I think I keep myself so busy that I don’t have to think about it.”

“And no one knows?”

“Natalie’s family, my family, and you.”

“Blake Carlton told me to ask you who Paige was.”

Devin closed his eyes and shook his head. “Someone has been hanging around my parents and asking questions. They asked Natalie too.”

This new revelation had me reeling again. “What?” I was more confused than ever.

“My mum told me some guy came by the house asking questions. I think it spooked my parents. The same person contacted Natalie. I’m assuming it’s Carlton.”

“Blake is going to a lot of trouble,” I said.

“Anything to undermine me.”

It made sense now. “So that’s why you’re telling me now. So you can get it out there before Blake does.”

“That was why, at first,” he said, and I could hear how hard he was working at staying honest. “But I love you, Luna. I want you in my life always. And that means meeting my parents, meeting my family. There was no hiding it anymore.”

I paused for a moment. I wanted to know more about Devin’s little girl. “Who does she look like?”

“I don’t know. She has blonde hair, greenish-blue eyes.”

“Your eyes?”

“They are like mine.”

“Does she have your last name?”

“No.”

“Is your name on her birth certificate?”

“I’m not sure. I think it is.”

“If one day you and I decide to get married, are you going to want children?”

“I don’t know, maybe?”

That stung. But should I have been surprised? If he didn’t want Paige in his life, why would he want any other children? “Do you think you might want to marry me?”

“Not at this moment. It’s five in the morning, and I don’t know anyone who would marry us at this hour.”

“I meant in the future,” I said, smiling slightly. It had been the first light moment in several hours.

“Do you want to marry me?” he asked, looking into my eyes.

“I think I could be persuaded.”

He stared at me, looking genuinely shocked. “After all that? You know all about me now and you’d still do it?”

“I would want to wait awhile. I think it would be too soon. But yes. One day.”

“I think you’re right,” he said, nodding. “ I do want to marry you, and I won’t forget what we talked about tonight. I’ll consider it all.”
