“Rafe wanted me here.”

“And I wanted Devin here! But he had to go cover for you.”

“I guess your brother won out,” Erich said smugly. “I mean, it’s a party, right? No hard feelings.”

I was furious and had finally had enough. I searched for Rafe, my third and final victim of the night. Rage had taken control of me now. I found him chatting with some sponsors, and I politely excused him from the conversation and pulled him into a corner. I knew people could likely overhear our conversation, but I no longer cared.

“Do you think this team revolves around you?”

Rafe frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“I have a better question. Does my life revolve around yours?”

“Calm down. What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Erich Riedl is here,” I spat.

My brother was looking at me with utter confusion. “He was invited.”

“Don’t play stupid with me. You wanted Riedl here because you knew if he was here Devin wouldn’t be.”

“It must be that time of the month.”

I had the urge to slap him across the face, but I restrained myself.

“You bastard,” I said through clenched teeth. “You probably did this for Carlton. Neither of you want me with Devin, and you got Erich in on it too. I’ve had enough, Rafe. This has to stop. Why can’t you just let me be happy? I wanted Devin here tonight. I wanted him here desperately, and you did everything you could do to prevent that. Why are you doing this?”

“Calm down. People are watching,” Rafe said, looking around and smiling at the crowd as if we were having a genteel conversation.

“How can you do this to your own sister? How can you hurt and betray me like this?”

“Luna, I truly don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Stop lying,” I said, holding back the tears that were threatening.

“This conversation is over. You’re not going to ruin this night for me,” he said, turning to go.

“Don’t walk away from me,” I screamed, tears coming down my face now.

He kept walking. I saw the stunned faces looking at me. Embarrassed, I ran through the crowd toward the nearest exit. I couldn’t bear to stay any longer. I hated Rafe for humiliating me further, and I hated myself for not being more composed. As I neared the door, two arms grabbed me. I feared it was Blake and was ready to fight him off, but when I looked up, it was Devin.

“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?”

I cried out in relief as I wrapped my arms around him. I breathed into his shoulder. “Just take me home.”

ChapterThirty-Three

Luna

Devin paced his living room. Rafe was seated on the sofa, a sour expression on his face. It was four in the morning. Devin had taken me home, and I wasn’t proud to say that I sobbed the whole way. He couldn’t make heads or tails of what had transpired at the Perez party, especially with all my babbling. But he was livid that I’d been hurt, nonetheless, and that Blake was still pursuing me. In a fit of rage, he’d thrown all the roses into the street, the ones I hadn’t had time to get rid of, and was ready to throw Rafe out as well.

Now Rafe’s wife and children were asleep, and Devin had practically dragged him out of bed. Devin wasn’t going to sleep until he had the story from Rafe’s lips.

“What the fuck happened tonight?”

“My sister had another one of her episodes,” Rafe said, unperturbed, and as if I weren’t even in the room to witness it.

“How dare you!” I snapped.
