“Can I get you anything?”

“No, no, I have plans with you.”

“You do?” I asked, searching Devin’s face for any clue as to why my mother was here.

“Yes, we are going to your brother’s hotel to have a little chat.”

“Oh,” I said dejectedly.

“Get your things. Let’s go,” Mom said.

Damn. The last person I wanted to see was Rafe, but there was no saying no to Maria Morelli. I found myself grabbing my phone and keys. “I’ll see you later,” I said, kissing Devin’s cheek. Mom put her arm through mine as we walked out to the garage.

We didn’t say much on the car ride. She asked about the flowers on the front lawn, and how Devin was, but the conversation was superficial. She was leaving her true thoughts for when we got to Rafe’s hotel.

As we entered Rafe’s hotel room, it was clear he’d received the same call I had. Eva and the children were nowhere to be found. I barely looked at Rafe as Mom motioned us all to sit around the table in his room. Rafe stared at his feet while I looked absently at an ugly painting on the wall.

“Carlos Boreno phoned me last night to tell me about the travesty that went on at this little party the two of you arranged.”

“It was Rafe’s party, not mine,” I said defensively.

Mom glanced at me and gave me a warning look. “You were there, weren’t you?”

“I had no choice.”

Rafe huffed. “That’s right, I put a gun to your head.”

“The two of you will stop this right now,” Mom warned.

We both fell silent.

“As if getting a call from Carlos wasn’t bad enough, I saw the papers this morning and read about how my children were screaming at one another. And then your little sister came up to me with her iPad and showed me a picture of the two of you yelling at each other. There is even a video, but fortunately, the audio is terrible. Is that how the two of you conduct yourselves when it comes to business?”

Again, she was met with silence.

“What did I tell you, Rafe, when you came to me with this idea of yours? This plan to take your sister’s trust fund money and pour it into some cars and make yourself a team?”

I looked at Rafe as he maintained his silence.

“I told you that if this got out of hand, if it damaged your relationship with your sister, I would pull the plug on this whole operation.”

Now I was confused. How would Mom pull the plug? It was our money …

“So, because Luna can’t have what she wants, you’re going to ruin my career?” Rafe spat.

“I don’t appreciate that tone of voice.”

“Sorry,” he said weakly.

I wished I had the same power Mom had over Rafe.

“I want to know exactly what is going on, and I want to hear what you both have to say.”

We began speaking at the same time, but Mom stopped us by putting up a hand.

“One at a time. Who wants to go first?”

“I will,” I said.
