“Sheriff. The mayor’s on the phone for you.”

The dispatcher grins and I groan silently.

And this is where it all goes off the rails.

CHAPTER3

Hartley

I’m not surprised when the dispatcher comes in, grinning. Everyone in town knows that we’ve got a love-hate relationship. Heavy on the hate!

But when he shoots me a look out of his peridot eyes, I can tell he’s frustrated as hell.

I feel it! I’ve never been as frustrated as I am around this guy. And everyone else gets happy me.

If he smiled, maybe he would too!

“Keep an eye on her, I’ll be right back.”

“How ya doing?” She asks me.

“Peachy.”

We barely get a chance to say a few words and Booker is back. He won’t look me in the eye and he shuts all his stuff down.

Then he hands me my purse and personal effects that he’d grabbed when one of the library patrons handed it to him.

“You’re free to go, Miss Hanover.”

I cock my head and the dispatcher walks off, snickering.

“What happened, Sheriff? Did I get bailed out?”

“You’re not under arrest.” His lean, tanned cheeks flush. A hellacious smile crosses my lips. “Is that because they found the paperwork? Just like I said?”

He rolls his eyes and huffs. “Yeah. It was stuck to another paper. Somebody is going to get their ass handed to them because it had gum on it.”

I nod my head and laugh. “Told ya.”

His green eyes light on my face and he moves close to me. “Maybe you should go before I change my mind.”

I back away. “You don’t have anything else to arrest me on.”

“You’re annoying as hell!” He growls and my belly clenches.

But I don’t back down. “That’s not a crime, Sheriff.”

“It should be.”

“So should it be to be a grumpy ass who doesn’t listen to anyone. But there you have it. Not a crime.”

He grits his teeth and I swear I hear him growl.

The dispatcher pops her head in. “Hey, Hartley. I’ll see you at the library later.”

“You bet!” I turn my gaze to my nemesis and smirk. “It’s been…interesting, Sheriff. See you later.”

He nods his head at me, his dark blondish brown hair glowing in the fluorescent lighting.
