Two familiar men hurried into the room, grabbing Carson and pulling him away. They were Carson’s security, not hospital security, and my heart sank.

“Mr Shelby, we need to go,” one of them urged.

He fought against them, snarling. “No! He needs to pay!”

The man held him back, nearly shouting to get Carson’s attention. “That’s Liam O’Connor’s little brother. We need to go. NOW.”

That made Carson pause. I didn't know who Liam O’Connor was, but he was powerful enough to make a man like Carson hesitate. He shrugged off his security, fixing his suit jacket.

“Fine. Grab her and let’s go.”

Before they could come close, Sean shot to his feet, standing in front of me. “If you want her, you’re gonna have to go through me. Security is already on its way.”

Carson bared his teeth, taking a step towards Sean, but his security held him back, speaking low.

“We can get her later. We need to go.”

The sound of boots running down the hallway caught their attention. With a last glare at us, Carson followed his security out and ran in the opposite direction. I couldn’t see what was happening in the hallway, but a few new security guards showed up in the room.

“Doctor O’Connor, are you alright?”

“I’m fine. Where’s the nurse?”

She popped up behind security, her expression worried. “I’m sorry, doctor. I didn't know what else to do.”

He shook his head, spinning around and kneeling beside me. “You did the right thing. Come help me. We need to move her.”

“But sir!”

“Remove her IV. If we don’t get her out of here, that bastard is going to come back.”

I wanted to weep with relief. He wasn’t sitting around waiting for Carson to come back. Knowing Carson, he’d come back with a lot more security and a lawyer. I didn’t want Sean getting into trouble for helping me.

He picked me up carefully, wincing when I whimpered. “I know, sweetheart. I’m sorry. But we need to get you out of here. Just hold on.” He glanced at the security guys. “Where’s Volkov?”

One of them shook his head. “He’s not answering his phone. He might be busy with the Koslov issue.”

Sean nodded. “Then I’m taking her to my brother’s. We need to sneak her out. They’re probably watching the building.”

The other security guy dipped his chin in acknowledgement. “We’ve got the SUV out back.”

“Okay good. Get everything ready. I need someone to grab her some scrubs. She’s too conspicuous right now.”

He set me on the bed, putting his hand against my shoulder with an intense look. “Just hold on, Rosie. I’ve got you.”

ChapterTwenty-Two

It tookwork to get me out of the hospital unnoticed. Sean had given me pain meds when we got to the hospital, not realizing that I’d need to move around a lot so soon afterwards. He and the nurse helped me dress in the scrubs she brought him, and she gave me a pair of running shoes to borrow. Sean grabbed his jacket from his office, putting it over my shoulders, and one of the security guys had a hat. They wheeled me all the way to the door before I had to force myself to walk, stumbling and clinging tightly to Sean’s arm as we crept out the door. It’d gotten dark, which was useful, and we slipped into the back of the SUV unnoticed.

“Okay, I need you to lie down, Rosie. Keep your head down, no matter what.”

Since it was just me and him in the back, when he moved as far over as possible, there was plenty of room for me to lie on my side. Even with the pain meds, it hurt, especially when Sean laid on top of me, covering my body with his. He shushed me softly, holding my hand, until we were far enough away that the driver gave us the all clear to sit up.

“I’m sorry. It’ll all be over soon, okay? Just a little more.”

I was sobbing, ‌but I didn’t let go of his hand. I’d take the pain as long as we could get away.

The car was quiet other than my crying, and dark. I had no idea who was driving or where we were going, but I trusted Sean. He squeezed my hand lightly, his eyes glued out the front window as we drove into the nicer neighborhoods in the city. When we pulled up in front of a massive wrought-iron gate, I clutched his hand tighter. It looked a lot like Carson’s house.
