“Come on. We should get inside.”

Turning my attention to the tall glass building, I grimaced. “C-Can I have just a second? I just need a little air.”

Her smile was gentle and understanding, and she nodded her head. “Good idea. It’s never easy watching them go. Let’s take a few deep breaths. Then we can head upstairs and get ready for the MWC. Knowing Jo, she’s going to offer you vodka to cheer you up, so be prepared for that.”

At my surprised look, she laughed. “I’ll tell you all about how she tried to help me after a really scary night with Dmitriy. Yuri can back me up. He was there that night.”

She offered me her hand. Drawing in a deep breath, I took it, heading towards the security guards who were waiting a few feet away. It was safe here. I was safe here. And Viktor would be back soon.

Just as we moved towards the building, we were swarmed on two sides. Shadowy figures came out of nowhere, shooting at the security guards who were waiting for us. Vlad swung around, his eyes wide.

“Run!”

We had no other choice but to spin around and run in the opposite direction of the building. We couldn’t go toward it without being caught in the crossfire, and when we tried to go to the sides, more cars swung to block the street, men firing out the windows. Gabi was frozen, her hands covering her ears, so I grabbed her arm and ran for my life.

This was what I was good at. I could run. I pulled her along, aiming for an alley close to us. Only, I wasn’t expecting it to be occupied. Two men were there, like they were waiting for us, and when we got close, they snatched us both, dragging us into the dark alley.

“I told you she’d run.”

The voice was familiar, and when I glanced over my shoulder, my heart stopped. It was the man from the alley, the one who had hurt me in punishment for warning Viktor. The man who was wrestling Gabi’s arms behind her back was the one who helped him.

The man holding me yanked me closer, burying his face in my hair. “You don't stink anymore. I guess that means we get to have our fun with you.”

Whimpering, I struggled against his hold. He just laughed, his grip on my arms painful as he forced me to walk down the alley. The man holding Gabi had to basically drag her. She wasn’t going anywhere without a fight. She was so brave, and I wished I could be like her, but I was terrified and I couldn’t get my limbs to listen to me.

Moving from alley to alley, they dragged us along until we were far enough away from the tower. The one holding me threw me forward, and I landed on my hands and knees with a cry. Gabi landed next to me, one arm wrapped protectively around her belly.

“Where is the boss?”

“He said he would meet us after he gave Volkov the chase.”

“Think we’ve got time to enjoy them a little?”

Gabi shot me a terrified look. I grimaced. I’d take it for her if I had to. This was my fault. And she was pregnant. I didn’t know if them hurting her could hurt the baby.

“Not yet. Once we move them, we can do what we want. Still can’t believe we got Volkov’s wife as well as this bitch. I feel like we’ve won the lottery.”

Moving slowly, I shifted closer to Gabi. I helped her sit against the alley wall, keeping my head down to not draw attention to us.

“Are you okay?” I whispered.

She nodded, grabbing my hand and squeezing tightly. I didn't know a lot about Gabi’s story, though Jo did say you had to go through something crazy to end up with their husbands. Being attacked on the street didn’t seem to be in her realm of expertise, though. I was the one who’d experienced this before. And for some reason, seeing her tear-filled eyes as she cradled the tiny swell of her belly made me less scared. I couldn’t panic now. I knew these streets, and I knew how to hide. If I could just get us away from them, I could keep her safe. Just like she did for me.

I didn’t sit beside her, instead staying in a squat. It eliminated a few seconds of scrambling if you had to get away quickly.

“Where the hell is he? We can’t wait around all night. It’s only a matter of time before those assholes come looking.”

The one who had grabbed me scowled at his partner. “Since when are you afraid of them?”

The other one glared. “I’m not scared.”

He snorted. “It looks like it. Maybe all your big talk is to hide the coward inside.”

The second man lunged forward, shoving the first hard enough that he stumbled and fell against the wall. The first one flashed him a feral look and, using the wall to push off, he launched himself at his partner.

Gabi shrieked when they came too close, each of them holding the other as they grappled for leverage. I pulled her to her feet and away so that they wouldn’t land on her. When neither of them looked in our direction, I glanced around. We were in a random alley, closer to the end on one side. If we ran fast enough, we could duck out the other side and find somewhere to hide before they saw where we went. I took a step back, and another, pulling Gabi with me, while my eyes remained locked on the pair fighting.

“What are you doing?” Gabi whispered harshly.
