She peeked around me, frowning. “We’re so close, though…”

We were. Only two streets away, maybe, but it felt like miles when I couldn’t see what was between us and our goal. We could be walking into a trap.

I swung around to suggest going north one street and trying again when I saw a shadow creeping towards us. With a scream, I grabbed Gabi’s arms and pulled her behind me.

“Gabi, run!”

“No! Wait!”

ChapterThirty-One

We both froze, and the shadow hurried forward, stepping into the light. I never thought I’d be relieved to see Yuri, but when he came closer, I burst into tears.

“Oh, thank god!” Gabi dashed around me, throwing her arms around Yuri. He hugged her tight, petting her hair, but when she pulled away, he made a face.

“Gabi, you stink.”

She gasped, pushing him away. “Shut up! We had to hide in a dumpster from the men who were threatening to rape us!”

He grimaced and pulled her back into his arms. “I’m sorry. I was just teasing.”

She looked grumpy, but she didn't push him away again. When she saw me watching, she opened up her arm, pulling me closer, so that I was in on the group hug. Yuri wrapped his arm around me, resting his head on top of Gabi’s.

“When my brother finds out I was right, he is going to lose his mind.”

Sniffling, Gabi stepped back. “What do you mean?”

He raised an eyebrow, looking smug. “He believes you are with Koslov. When I found your phone in the dumpster, I suggested you were on the run. He did not believe me. I look forward to rubbing it in his face.”

She rolled her eyes. “Shut up, Yuri. Can we go home now?”

Chuckling, he led the way towards the opening of the alley, but before he could step out, I grabbed his shirt, yanking him back. He stumbled against me before righting himself, shooting me a confused look.

“That man. He was one of the ones who grabbed us.”

I pointed across the street. I saw him in the opposite alley when the screen of his phone lit up his face. I couldn’t see much of him now that the phone was against his ear, but I could see the burning end of his cigarette as he kept watch.

Yuri nudged us both backwards, his eyes narrowed on the man. “You are sure?”

I nodded. “He’s also the man who attacked me and left me to die.”

Gabi gasped, her hands covering her mouth.

Yuri made an irritated noise. “I have been walking around the building since the sun went down. This was the only alley that had no one hiding in it. Our way in is blocked.”

Gabi let out a whimper and when we both looked at her, she had big tears streaming down her face. “I want to go home…”

Wrapping my arms around her shoulders, I shushed her lightly. “Me too. We’ll figure it out.”

Bobbing his head in agreement, Yuri shot her a cocky grin. “I am your brother. I will get you back home. Just give me a moment, I need to–”

The man across the alley straightened, and it looked like he was looking right at us. I sucked in a sharp breath, taking a step back.

“My car is on the opposite corner. We will get in and leave. Walk normally, so he doesn’t think it is you,” Yuri demanded. He took Gabi from me, putting his arm around her shoulder to lead her onto the street. I followed on her other side, holding her hand for dear life.

We crossed closer to the crosswalk, but we weren’t alone. The man was stalking our direction and when he reached behind him, I pushed them both forward.

“Hurry!”
