“Let her go, Galen! It’s over,” Sonny yelled as he struggled to maintain his cool.

Galen pulled Avery to her feet and pressed his gun against her temple. He shook his head.

“Fuck off. You may have gotten most of my guys but I’m still here and I’ve got the fucking prize.”

Avery struggled in Galen’s arms until he pressed the barrel of gun harder against her head. She stopped moving and Sonny’s gaze locked with hers. In that moment, he saw her fear but also her determination. Sonny knew that Avery’s stillness didn’t mean she’d given up but rather, was smart enough to know what to do in this kind of situation. Fighting Galen now would only spark his temper.

Sonny’s arms began to shake but he moved a step closer. And then he noticed it.

Avery opened her right hand, the one laying by her side, and Sonny caught sight of the knife. His hellion wasn’t without means, and another surge of adrenaline flooded his body.

“You got nowhere to go, Galen,” Sonny taunted him, trying to distract Galen. “You kill her, I kill you. Either way, this is only going to end for you. You can let her go and I might give you a head start before I hunt you down.”

Galen moved back, dragging Avery with him. “Always so cocky, so sure of yourself. You won’t be when I blow her brains out across this stage.”

Avery looked down, and Sonny glanced at her hands again. With her left hand, she showed five fingers, then four, three…

Sonny took a steadying breath and prepared himself.

Two, one…

Avery’s right hand moved quickly as she plunged the knife into Galen’s thigh, blood drenching his denim as he screamed. Galen loosened his hold of Avery and she dropped to her knees.

Sonny took the shot.

The first one hit Galen in the left shoulder and he staggered back. Avery fell flat to the floor and scrambled up, running over to Sonny.

“Go to hell,” Galen yelled out as he managed to fire one shot.

It missed Sonny by several inches and hit the wood floor instead, the splinters exploding everywhere.

Sonny gave him a feral smile. “I’m sure I will. But you first.”

Sonny fired two more rounds, hitting Galen in the chest.

Galen’s gun clattered when it hit the floor and he crumpled to his knees, then fell sideways. Sonny grabbed Avery’s arm and together, they rushed over to Galen.

Sonny felt for a pulse but there was none. Galen was gone.

Sonny pulled Avery into his arms and they were both shaking hard.

“Baby, you okay?” Sonny asked as he looked her over.

“I’m fine. What about the others? It’s so dark in here now, I can hardly see a damn thing.”

“We shot out some of the lights,” Sonny tapped his earpiece. “Xander, Gage, we just got rid of Galen. I don’t see anyone else moving in here.”

“We killed five more guys on their way out. A few managed to avoid us and took off running,” Gage replied. “Is Avery okay?”

“Avery’s with me, she’s fine. I think that whoever’s on the run ain’t coming back to help their brothers. We got more than half their members, including their President and highest VP. Time to get the fuck gone. Avery and I will be out in a few minutes.”

“How soon do you think the cops will arrive?” Avery asked as he guided her down the stairs and back through the main room.

“Hard to say. This place is remote, and I got the owner right off the bat, so I don’t think any alarm was raised. It doesn’t matter, we’ll be long gone by then.”

Sonny and Avery ran through the rest of the club, around cracked tables and broken chairs and bodies that littered the floor. Not just bikers but a few dancers too. Avery paused and Sonny turned around.

“What’s wrong?”
