But Sonny wasn’t used to feeling vulnerable to anyone. Avery had the power to fucking destroy him, to break his previously unbreakable heart. And that was a heady realization.

So he did what any guy who couldn’t face his emotions did. He ran.

But as each hour passed, his gut churned, and his head throbbed. It had nothing to do with a hangover and everything to do with the way he’d dismissed Avery. Pushed her away. And she hadn’t chased after him either. She’d replied with a terse message and that was that. He didn’t blame her.

He needed to talk to Avery. To make things right between them again. And to finally face the biggest demon of all; himself.

He got Vanier to close the bar for him and headed back to the clubhouse around ten PM. The place was quiet, save for Rochelle and Nate cleaning up the kitchen.

“You guys seen Avery?” Sonny asked.

Rochelle turned and gave him a glare that had him taking a step back.

“No. And even if I did, I wouldn’t tell the likes of you,” Rochelle snapped, slamming the fridge door closed.

Avery must have told them about the messages. Fuck.

Then Nate turned on him. “You’re my brother, Sonny, but treat Avery with anything less than respect and we have a problem, you hear?”

“Look, I freaked out and blew her off. But I need to talk to her. Do you know where she is?” Sonny asked again.

Nate shrugged his shoulders. “She left.”

“What do you mean, she left? Where’d she go?”

“Out of town for a few days. She needed space,” Rochelle replied, still pissed.

“I need to talk to her. It can’t wait.”

“Why?” Gage’s voice boomed out behind him.

He turned to find his president scowling at him. Oh shit.

“I asked you a question, Sonny. Why do you need to talk to her? Cause she left here like a bat out of hell and told me not to track her. She only does that when she’s upset and needs to clear her head.”

Sonny ran a hand over his face, tracing his scar. “I pushed her away. But it was a mistake. Tell me where I can find her.”

“Why should I? She ain’t nothing to you.”

“Don’t say that! She’s everything, fuck, she’s…she’s it for me, man. Even though I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing. I need to tell her.”

“So you can get her hopes up and then run off again like a fucking coward? I don’t think so,” Gage scoffed and turned around.

“I’m not running again. I know what I need to do. Now give me her fucking location before I go after Xander and force him to tell me. By any means necessary.”

Gage slowly turned and his eyes locked on Sonny’s. There was a warning in Gage’s eyes that Sonny understood. “You threatening me?”

“Hell fucking yes. I’m only gonna ask one more time. I don’t give a shit what you do to me, you tell me where she is!” Sonny yelled.

Gage walked up to him, standing eye to eye, and Sonny began to sweat.

Pissing off Gage was something he avoided and with good reason. The man didn’t survive and thrive as President of the largest MC in Alberta for over twenty years by being meek. And if Gage’s pissed off expression was anything to go by, Sonny was in for it.

“She’s my family, my baby. You hurt her again, I will end you, are we clear?”

“I only want to make her happy. I swear on my Harley.”

Gage let out a surprising chuckle. “Swearing on your sled? It must be love.”
