He felt like a total shit for hurting her. But how was it she grew more beautiful every time he saw her?

“Do you want a glass of wine?” Avery asked. “It’s either that or water.”

“Wine is good,” Sonny replied, his palms suddenly sweaty.

God, he was fucking nervous, like a teenager before his first kiss. He whipped off his leather jacket. Better.

Avery sauntered over to the couch and leaned down to grab the bottle on the table. She walked back over to the kitchen and grabbed another wineglass from the cupboard. After pouring a generous amount, she offered it to Sonny.

“Thanks,” Sonny mumbled and gratefully took a large gulp.

He winced at the taste – he hated wine – but the alcohol was welcome. He needed fortification for what was about to come next.

“What did you want to talk about?” Avery asked quietly as she moved back over to the couch, sitting down and curling her legs up underneath her.

“I made a mistake. Running off this morning. And the stupid texts,” Sonny murmured.

“I was upset about it but maybe you were right,” Avery whispered as she reached for her wineglass and took a sip.

“No. No, I just…I saw you this morning in my bed and it felt so fucking right, Avery. I couldn’t believe it. Still can’t. You and me? How the fuck did this happen? How did I fall in love with you?”

Avery choked on her wine and began to cough.

Sonny rushed over and removed the glass from her hand before she spilled it. “Are you okay?”

Avery shook her head and coughed again. “You just told me you’re in love with me. You, Sonny Dolan. Who are you and what’s going on?”

Sonny laughed, and his nerves ebbed a bit. He sat down beside her, the firelight casting the room in a golden glow.

“I mean it, baby. I fucking love you. I know it’s crazy, but it’s the truth. I don’t know what you did to me, woman, but I’m so far gone over you.”

Avery eyes filled up and tears threatened to overflow. “Then why did you push me away? I deserve better than that. Last night I told you I loved you.”

Sonny leaned forward and reached for her, but Avery slid back. Oh no.

He pounced and pinned Avery to the cushion before she could move away and stared down at her face, the tears slipping out of the corner of her eyes. With more gentleness than he’d ever imagined, Sonny wiped away her tears and cupped her face.

“You deserve everything. And I pushed you away out of fear because I’m an idiot. But I quickly realized my error. And do you know why?”

Avery shook her head.

“Because your love is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Your love is the only thing I fucking want.”

Avery’s lips trembled as she finally let out a small smile. All the blood in Sonny’s body headed south.

“I went looking for you, but you’d already left. And then I threatened Gage when he wouldn’t tell me where you’d gone.”

Avery’s eyes widened. “You did what? You threatened my dad?”

Sonny nodded. “I’d fight anyone for you, even the president of our club. I’d let him whoop my ass if it meant I could get to you.”

Avery chuckled and then her face turned serious again.

“Since you love me, I suppose I can give you one more chance,” she whispered as she ran her hands up his back, under his t-shirt, her nails raking his overheated skin. “And you can stay tonight.”

“Only tonight?”

“Maybe for the next three days. But I’m still mad at you.”
