“Well, if school is kicking your ass, the rest of us are doomed.”

“It’s not even the classes. It’s the internship. There’s just so much that has to be done,” she lets out a sigh. “Anyhow, what can I getcha?”

“Let’s go with mocha. Double shot of espresso, though. I need all the caffeine I can get. Oh, and a chocolate muffin. No, make it two.”

Yasmin lets out a chuckle, “A hard day?”

If it were only that easy. It’s been a tough few weeks, hell, tough last fewyears. It seems like every time life wants to give me a break, something changes, andboom, I’m back at square one.

“Something like that.”

Yasmin presses a few buttons on the espresso machine before glancing at me. “What happened?”

“One of my photography professors gave us a project to work on. It’s part of our grade, but the best one will also be displayed in a Boston gallery.”

Yasmin’s mouth falls open. “No way, that’s huge, right?”

“What’s huge?”

I look up to find Nixon standing behind me, a big smile on his lips as he glances between Yas and me.

“Jade’s work will be displayed in agallery,” Yasmin says, placing the coffee cup and muffins in front of me.

You’d think my work would hang next to the freaking Mona Lisa, by the way she says it.

“Correction,” I grab the cup in my hand, inhaling the sweet aroma of coffee. “My work will be displayed in a galleryifI win this damn competition,” I mutter, taking a sip of my coffee.

“What competition?”

The hair at the nape of my neck rises at the sound of his voice, and then I feel my tongue burning. “Shit.” I swallow, the coffee burning its way down my throat, so I wave my hand in front of my mouth as if that’ll help with the burn.

“Are you okay?” Nixon asks, his hand patting my back.

“Fine,” I mutter, my mouth feeling tender. “That damn coffee is just hot.”

“Maybe you should try getting a cold one next time.”

I turn around and glare at Prescott, who’s obviously enjoying this. Asshat. “I don’t remember asking for your opinion.”

“I’m just saying,” he shrugs.

“Well, don—”

Nixon gets in between the two of us. “Okay, you two, can we not?”

Prescott watches me for a moment, before turning to Yas. “Can I get a coffee?”

“Jade.” Nixon nudges me with his elbow.

“Whatever.” I turn around, grab one of the muffins and peel off the paper.

I haven’t talked to Prescott for a few days, since that party at his place. When we hooked up in his room, and the world shattered at my feet. He tried to message me, but I didn’t answer any of them. That was my answer to anything I didn’t want to do these days.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

This thing between us was too intense.Hewas too intense, and I just needed some time to gather myself and put some much-needed distance between us.

“Oh, and can I have one of those too?”
