Before he was pissed at the world because of his injury.

Before I was broken and jaded after witnessing my mom’s death.

Before, when we were just two kids who knew nothing about life.

“C’mon, Wentworth, let’s get rolling.”

My brother’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts. I blink, taking a step back. Prescott looks at me for a second longer before shifting his attention to my brother. “Let’s go.”

I turn around, grabbing one of the boxes. When I look up, I find Grace watching me silently.

“I’m going to put these away,” I say to nobody in particular and dash for the bathroom.

Closing the door behind me, I drop the box on the counter and lean against it, letting out a long breath.

This is ridiculous.

My phone vibrates, drawing my attention. Grateful for the distraction from the certain somebody who shall not be named, I pull the phone out of my back pocket. I’m expecting Nixon’s message about one thing or another like he’s sent me so far, but it’s not my brother.

Unknown: Where are you? I stopped by the house, but it was empty.

Unknown: We need to talk.

Unknown: I miss you.

My fingers clench around the phone as I reread the messages. This is so not the kind of distraction I had in mind. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I exit the app and lock my phone before sliding it back in place. Shoving all the unwanted thoughts to the back of my mind, I leave the bathroom and join my friends.

“So I told her, babe, either you stop that shit, or there won’t be anything left for the second round,” Matteo, best friend of Grace’s boyfriend Mason, shakes his head as everybody starts laughing. “I swear to you, some chicks are crazy.”

He joined us a couple of hours ago, slightly traumatized from his most recent hookup. No one could blame him if the story he told us was true.

“Dude, you have to stop using dating apps. There are a hundred shades of crazy over there.”

My back stiffens at Prescott’s dark chuckle.

I open my mouth to tell him exactly what I think, but my brother’s faster.

“As if you’re the one to talk. Did you forget that chick that was legitmewingwhen she was all hot and bothered?” Yasmin slaps Nixon over the head. “Ouch!” He looks down at her, pouting exaggeratedly. “What was that for?”

“Do you really have to be so crass?”

Nixon rubs the back of his head. “Is it really crass if it’s true?”

Prescott lets out a loud groan, “You did not just remind me of that.”

“Mewing?” Mason asks.

“So there was this chick…” Nixon starts, just as Prescott pushes to his feet.

“No, nope, not listening.”

“Oh, come on! You can’t leave us hanging like this now,” Matteo protests. “I shared my crazy dating story with you.”

“I can, and I will. I’m off to take a piss while he tells you the story.”

That dark gaze meets mine, so I roll my eyes. “So charming.”
