Letting out a shaky breath, I run my hand over my face. “How do I get myself in situations like this?”

Shaking my head, I walk around the car and slide into my seat, locking the doors as soon as I’m inside.

Jade turns to me, her eyes narrowed. “Seriously? You put the child’s lock on me?”

“I’m not putting it past you to jump out of the car. God knows you’re crazy enough to do it,” I mutter as I shift the car into drive. “What were you doing here anyway?”

We’re on the outskirts of Blairwood, a good thirty minutes by foot from our place, if not more. I usually go driving in this direction since it helps me avoid cops and people, so I can let my baby go without worry. There is no reason for her to be here.

Jade lifts her chin and turns her gaze out the window, clearly ignoring me.

Fine, we can do it her way.

I keep my eyes on the road, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles are white as the car accelerates down the road. The music is the only buffer between us.

Every once in a while, my eyes dart toward her. I want to ignore her, but it’s hard when she’s right there. Her presence, herscent, fill the small confines of the car.

“Where are we going?” Jade asks as I pass the turn toward our neighborhood. “You said you were taking me home, and in case you missed it, that’s that way.”

“I didn’t miss it.”

She grits her teeth. “Just take me home, Wentworth!”

I glance toward the passenger seat. “Being a brat doesn’t look good on you.”

Her eyes narrow, and I feel that she’d probably strangle me if I weren’t the one driving. Shifting my attention back to the road, I continue driving until I spot the small, familiar sign. I turn the blinker on, slowing the car down so I can shift to a bumpy narrow road, making my way up the hill. It takes us another fifteen minutes, but we finally get to the spot.

Not waiting for Jade, I unlock the car and get out. Running my fingers through my hair, I walk to the front of the car and lean against the hood, taking the first deep breath in what feels like forever.

I’m not sure how long I just stand there all alone when I hear the car door open. Feet touch the gravel, making it crunch, and then Jade slides up next to me.

“What is this place?” she asks, her eyes glued to the bright lights of Blairwood shining in the distance.

“Just somewhere I go when I need to be alone.”

Slowly she turns around, those blue eyes fixing on me. My mouth turns dry as she just stares at me. So I stare back, not uttering a word.

“I never heard of this place.”

I shrug. “I’m not sure if many people know about it.”

The little lookout is hidden from view and is barely big enough to fit one car. I stumbled upon it completely by accident when I got lost my freshman year of college, and ever since, it’s been a place I would come to when I needed some space.

“Huh…” With that, she turns around.

“That’s all you’ve got? Huh?”

“What do you want me to say? It’s just weird.”

“What is?”

“You. Just when I think I’m starting to know you, something else comes up that throws me off guard.”

You’re not the only one.

The words are on the tip of my tongue, but I bite them back, refusing to voice them out loud. I don’t get this. I don’t getus.

What the hell are we even doing? Sex should be easy, straightforward. At least, it used to be. We get some good old-fashioned exercise, and then we go our separate ways. But there isn’t anything easy about this, far from it. If it were any other girl, I would have never brought her here. To my safe place. I know I wouldn’t. But this isJade.I didn’t even think about it. I just came here. I don’t know what to do about it. What to do about her. And it’s scary as fuck.
