She pulls off her jacket and scoots up to one of the bar stools at the other end of the room. Grace is with her, as is a vaguely familiar tall guy. I watched them chat for a bit, my eyes zeroed in on her.

She looks good in a tight-fitting black tee and a pair of jeans.

More than good.

As if she can sense my gaze on her, she looks around the dark room until her gaze lands on me.

My mouth goes dry as we stare at one another, the whole room falling into the background. She’s the first one to break our stare, returning her attention to her friends.

“Prescott?”

Forcing myself to turn around, I find Zane watching me with a probing gaze. “You, okay?”

“Yeah, just looking for the waiter, that’s all.”

Zane looks over my shoulder, and it takes all of me to stay still and not do the same as those green eyes turn to me. “Mhmm… waiter.”

It’s clear that he doesn’t trust me for shit, but I don’t bother defending myself. Instead, I look around the table. “Who wants another round?”

CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

JADE

“No.” I shift to the other side, tossing the blanket aside. “No!”

I sit upright, my hand flying to my chest. I can feel the rapidthump-thump-thumpof my heart as it beats against my chest, my lungs inhaling and exhaling rapidly.

Just a dream.I try to reassure myself as I will my breathing to calm down.It was just a dream.

Sliding my hand over my face, I rub at my temples, feeling the aching throbbing behind them. Letting out a sigh, I drop my hand into my lap and look around the space.

My room.

I’m in my room back home.

The anxiety grows inside of me, making my lungs tighten.

I’m home which means… I stumble upright and run out the door. My feet pound against the hardwood floors as I make my way down the hallway and pull open the door to my parent’s room.

Bracing my hands against the doorway, breathing hard, I watch the still form lying on the bed. My stomach sinks, my chest tightening as I just stare at it. The room is still, that stale smell of antiseptic and death filling the space.

“No,” I shake my head, tears filling my eyes. “No, no, no… This can’t be happening. It’s too soon. Not yet, just not yet. This isn’t real. It can’t be real.”

Covering my mouth to stop the sobs from coming out, I make myself take a step forward. And then another one and another. Until I’m standing in front of the bed. In front of that immobile body lying there covered with the bedsheet.

I sink my teeth into my cheek until the copper taste of blood fills my mouth.

With a knot in my throat, I move forward. I suck in a long breath as I lean over the bed, my trembling fingers curling around the bedsheet.

“Just do it already,” I mutter to myself.

Closing my eyes, I yank the sheet away in one swift movement.

I expect to see my mom’s face.

But when I open my eyes, it’s not my mom’s face I see.

It’s mine.
