“No.” Shaking my head, I grab my earbuds and tuck them into my ears, turning on the music to the max as I speed up the treadmill going into a run.

I’m done listening to them making this more than it is. More than it can ever be. Not that I want it to be more.

Right?

Right.

The idea alone is preposterous. Jade and I could never be together. Not only would we kill each other, but Nixon would kill me if he were ever to find out I messed with his little sister.

No, we would never work as a couple.

Pushing thoughts of Jade back, I focus on finishing my jog before I switch to the weights. Today it’s a leg day, which means I’ll be beat once we’re done.

And I’m not wrong. Two hours later, sweat is dripping from me, making my shirt cling to my chest as we make our way back to the locker room. My legs are shaking underneath me, but only the fact that I’m still standing is pushing me forward.

Just a little bit more.

Entering my combination, I pull my bag out of the locker and rampage through it until I find the pain meds. Three tablets fall into my palm, and I pop them into my mouth.

“What are those for?”

Nixon’s question makes the pills stick in my throat. Swallowing, I force them down as my best friend watches me with interest.

“Umm… my head’s killing me.” The lie falls easily from my tongue.

I grab my water bottle, washing down the bitter taste lingering in my mouth that I’m not completely sure is only because of the pills.

“A migraine.”

“Since when are you having migraines?” Zane asks as he pulls his tee over his head and tosses it on the bench.

“Since, you assholes keep asking all the dumb questions.” I tug the shirt off, so it’s not plastered to me.

The idea of taking a shower now and dragging myself back home sounds tiring as fuck.

Screw this.

I grab my hoodie and toss it on before shoving my things into the bag. “I’m out of here.”

“No shower?”

“Nah, I’ll just grab it when I get home.”

Nixon’s brows rise. “You not coming to breakfast with us?”

After we’re done at the gym, we all go and stuff ourselves with food because we’re like a pack of hungry lions. Usually, I’d go with them, but…

Or you could stay.

I’m not sure where the words came from. I hated girls in my space. I’d never leave them there all by themselves, too afraid it would be a sign to them this is something more than it is. But this is Jade we’re talking about.

“Nah, I’m fine.”

“He’s going home to get his girl,” Spencer smirks and wiggles his brows like the idiot he is.

“Shut up, Monroe.” I grab my duffle and toss it over my shoulder. “I’m out of here. You figure out how you’ll get home.”

“Hey, that’s not fair.”
