“That’s for irritating me. I’ll see you guys later.”

Exiting the locker room, I make my way to the parking lot. Ignoring the pain, I slide inside and turn on the ignition. The drive back to the apartment is fast since most of the campus is still sleeping, and I take the steps instead of the elevator to make it quicker.

My heart is pounding furiously when I pull the door open and go straight to my room, expecting to find Jade sleeping in my bed, but instead, I find it empty.

I sit down on the mattress, my hand running over the cool sheets, the faint scent of lavender and sex still lingering in the air.

She left.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

JADE

My gaze is zeroed in on the key as I twist it this way and that, over and over again.

Or you could stay.

I flip the key between my fingers, over the pointer, under the middle, over the middle, under the pointer.

So you can lock up before leaving.

Seriously, what was he thinking? Leaving me with the key to his place? What if I was some kind of psycho? What would he do then?

Or you could stay.

A shudder runs down my spine as those words ring in my head. It would have been so easy, so freaking easy to stay. I wanted it. I wanted it badly. That’s why I forced myself to get out of his comfy, warm bed that smelled just like him, put on my clothes, and got the hell out of there.

Sex.

That’s all that we’re doing.

Hooking up and getting the edge off.

But damn, it felt good to sleep next to him last night. It was the first night in weeks that I got a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. Well, except that other night when he slept in my bed.

Or you could sta—

The door opens in the hallway, soft footsteps padding over the hardwood floor. I look over my shoulder just in time to see Grace’s messy head pop into the living room.

“Mo—” A frown appears between her brows as she sees me sitting at the bar. “Why are you up?”

“Good morning to you too.” I tilt my head toward the coffee machine. “Coffee’s done.”

“How long have you been up?”

“Long enough.”

Still looking at me suspiciously, she makes her way to the coffee machine and pours herself a cup. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, just couldn’t sleep.” My gaze drops down to the key in my hand. “Do you have a key to Mason’s place?”

Grace whips her head in my direction, her wide eyes meeting mine. “Talk about a one-eighty.”

I shake my head. “This was a mistake, sorry.”

I’m about to push to my feet and get the hell out of here when Grace stops me. “No, it’s fine. I’m just surprised, that’s all. I do have a key. Why?”

Getting my ass back to the chair, I shrug. “Just wondering, that’s all.”
