Me: I guess I’ll have to find a creative way to congratulate you if you win, Hotshot.

There.

That’s what this is about.

Sex.

The only thing it can ever be.

The only thing Iwantit to be.

“C’mon, c’mon, c’mon,” I mutter, my fingers holding onto the railing as I watch the game unfold on the field. But just when it seems one of the running backs has found an opening and is about to throw the ball to Prescott, he’s tackled to the ground, and the ball’s intercepted, and the other team starts running toward the end zone.

“Fucking hell.” Yasmin pounds her fisted hand against the side of her leg as the score changes just as the clock runs out, signaling the Ravens have lost.

“Well, that was…” my words trail off as I shake my head.

“Horrible?” Yasmin suggests as we follow the crowd out of the stadium.

“I was going to say bad, but yeah. Horrible works too.”

The overall mood is completely somber as the crowd moves at snail’s pace. It was painful to watch the game. Ever since the Ravens stepped onto the field, nothing had gone their way. They lost the coin toss, Hillworth decided to start on the offensive, and scored their first touchdown in two downs. It’s like they’ve read our defense completely, and shattered any possibility of a comeback.

“Nixon will be in a bad mood. He really wanted to beat Hillworth this year.”

“True.” And he wasn’t the only one. “Can you even blame him? That was an epic shitshow, and now the stakes are even higher than ever if the Ravens want to make it to the playoffs this year.“

“I know,” Yasmin lets out a sigh. “He really wants to win and go out on a high.”

“They might still make it,” I offer weakly, although we’re both aware that their chances were slim.

Slim but not non-existent.

We change the subject as we make our way out of the stadium and go to the back of the building, where the boys will exit once they’re done with all the post-game stuff.

I debate about texting Prescott but change my mind. Knowing how he is, he probably won’t even bother checking his phone.

“Callie’s in Boston?” I ask, noticing that Yasmin’s typing something.

Although Callie’s boyfriend isn’t part of the Ravens team any longer, she’s been going to the games with us as long as she was on campus.

“Yeah, they watched the game and wanted to check how Nix is doing.” Yas pockets her phone. “Hayden has a home game on Monday, so she wanted to be there for him.”

I nod my head, my eyes glued to the damn door. “How’s she dealing with all of it?”

“Callie? Surprisingly really good. Although, that might be due to the fact that if that man’s not on the field or in the gym, he’s texting her. I swear she’s glued to her phone.”

“I mean, as long as it’s working for them.”

Just then, the door opens. The guys slowly start to come out, matching serious expressions on their faces. I bounce on the balls of my feet, nibbling at the inside of my cheek as I wait for Prescott to come. I expect him to be behind my brother, but there’s only Sullivan.

I give him a sad smile. Losing out on the field must have sucked, but watching your teammates lose from the sidelines and not being able to help must have been excruciating. He nods at me before disappearing with some of his friends just as Nixon joins us. He wraps his arm around Yasmin’s neck, burrowing his head into the crook of her neck, and pulls her into his body.

“I’m so sorry, babe,” Yasmin whispers softly.

“Yeah, well, it is what it is.”
