“Shh… It’s me.” I whisper as I brush a strand of her dark hair behind her ear.

“Prescott?”

“You left your window open.”

Through the light coming through the crack in the curtains, I can see her blink a few times, chasing away the sleep.

“I did.”

“Do you want me to leave?” I ask anyhow, wanting to make sure she’s okay with this.

“Do you want to leave?” she counters right back.

I shake my head, unable to voice the words out loud. But I don’t have to. Not when it comes to Jade.

She pulls the blanket open, a silent invitation.

And I take it.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, pulling her body against mine. “For yelling at you earlier. I never wanted you to see me like this.”

She turns around, her palm cupping my cheek, fingers tracing over the bruise from where Dad punched me earlier. “I’m sorry he treats you that way. You don’t deserve it.”

She’s wrong, though.

I do deserve it, but I don’t bother correcting her because it feels good having somebody in my corner. And selfishly, I’ll take it, although I know I don’t deserve it.

JADE

“Why are you frowning like that?”

I blink, the screen of my camera coming back into focus before I look up, only to find Prescott observing me from across the room. He’s sitting at my desk, his dirty blond hair mussed from how he ran his fingers through it, that thick stubble covering his jaw.

The feeling of it scratching my inner thighs as Prescott went down on me this morning flashes in my mind, a shudder running down my spine. Yup, you’re not going to hear me complain about that anytime soon. It’s safe to say we were late for brunch. Again. But thankfully, we came in just as Edie let out a huge burp, drawing the attention from us slipping into the diner barely a minute apart.

“Just thinking.” I shift in my seat, letting the camera drop into my lap.

When we got home earlier, I expected Prescott to go back to his place, but he suggested he’d come after he’d taken a shower and changed so we could study together.

I wasn’t sure where that put us, but it was nice having somebody here. Talking with somebody about things that don’t include boyfriends and dates and whatnot. I love my friends, and I love spending time with them, but it would be a lie if I said that things haven’t changed in this past year because they have.

“About?”

“What the hell I’m going to do for this project.”

“Still no idea?”

“Nope.”

And I was starting to get irritated by the whole thing. Photography has always come easy to me. And now, this one time I need it to be perfect, I’m struggling.

He lifts his arms in the air, stretching. I watch his muscles flex, the hem of his shirt rising and revealing his defined abs. I nibble at my lip, that ache growing inside me. No matter how much we’re together or how many orgasms I have, I can’t seem to get enough of him.

Prescott lets his hands fall, the sound snapping me out of my thoughts as his knowing gaze lands on mine. “Maybe you should take a step back.”

I give him a pointed look. “Did you ever see me take a step back?”
