“Where the hell is my sister?”

My eyes snap open at the sound of Nixon’s voice.

Shit.

Shit, shit, shit.

I look at the still-sleeping Prescott next to me, completely unaware of the shitshow that’s about to happen. There’s a frown etched between his brows like even in his sleep, there’s this weight hanging over him.

“Prescott,” I whisper, giving his shoulder a little shake. “Wake up. You need—”

My door bursts open, banging against the wall. Prescott’s eyes snap open just as the light is turned on.

I close my eyes, partly because of the headache that’s booming behind my temples, partly because I don’t want to be here and face this disaster.

“Jade, what the…” Nixon’s voice dies down.

Maybe this is all just in my head. A bad dream. Maybe…

“Wentworth?” my big brother’s voice has turned to ice.

My eyes snap open to find Nixon looking from Prescott to me and then back to Prescott. His hands ball into fists.

“I’m going to kill you,” he growls, crossing the distance to the bed. He pulls Prescott out of the bed, his fist connecting to Prescott’s face before I can even open my mouth. “That’s for sleeping with my sister.”

“Nixon!” I yell, jumping out of bed as Prescott staggers back from the impact.

“And this is for lying to me about it.” This time his hand connects to Prescott’s gut, and he does nothing to stop it. Of course, he wouldn’t.

“And this…”

“Stop it!” I get in between the two of them, facing my brother. “You need to stop this, Nixon. Right now.”

“He was sleeping with you behind my back!”

“Well, then you should punch me also because I’ve been sleeping with him too.”

Nixon turns his glaring eyes to me. “I’m not punching you. Him, on the other hand…”

He tries to reach for Prescott once again, but I press my hands against Nixon’s chest and push him hard. “Stop this. You’re acting like a jackass.”

“Jackass?” Nixon lets out an unamused chuckle. “I’m acting like a jackass? What about you, Jade? Huh? What about you?”

“We’re not talking about me. You need to calm do—”

“Calm down? You wantmeto calm down? You’re drinking and partying like you’re never going to do it again. You’re sleeping behind my back with my best friend. You’re enteringpit fightsthat leave you all beaten and bruised. And you wantmeto calm down?” Nixon shakes his head, the disappointment clear on his face. “What were you thinking, Jade?”

“Nixon…” Prescott tries to push me behind him, but I stay put. This is between my brother and me.

Nixon shifts his attention over my shoulder. If looks could kill, I’m pretty sure Prescott would be dead.

“Shut up, Wentworth. Just shut the fuck up. Fucking my little sister behind my back, seriously, dude? This whole situation has you written all over it. Was it your idea?” Nixon tries to grab Prescott, but I shove him away. “Was—”

“He didn’t do anything!”

“It doesn’t seem like that to me. You were never like this before. Now you’ve become reckless. Drinking, partying, fighting… Do you have a death wish or something? Seriously, Jade, give me one good reason why you’d be so reckless to…”

“Because I’m dying!” I yell, the truth slipping off my lips before I can think twice about it.
