I cover my mouth, but it’s already too late; the words are out in the open. The silence that falls over the room is deafening.

My brother’s eyes, the ones that perfectly match my own, widen in shock.

And Prescott…

I’m grateful I can’t see his face right this moment, but I can feel his body go utterly still behind me.

“What…” Nixon takes a step back, his throat bobbing as he swallows. “What are you talking about? You’re not dying. That’s bullshit.”

Oh, Nixon.

The way he says it, with utmost certainty, like if he can say it out loud, it’ll make it so, breaks my heart.

“You’re not dying! Tell me this is some kind of joke because I swear, Jade…”

If only it would be that easy.

But nothing is ever easy.

Not for us.

But I knew I couldn’t keep hiding this for much longer, and I couldn’t have Prescott take the blame for something he didn’t do.

So I do the only thing I can. I say the truth, although, I know it’ll shatter the world as we know it, and nothing will ever be the same again.

“I have cancer.”
