Great, just… great.

“Okay, let’s get you out of here.”

I try to pull her closer to me so I have a better grip on her, but she presses her hand against my chest, pushing me back. “I can walk on my own.”

“No, doll, I don’t think you can. And while I think it would be fun to let you try, I don’t have time for that shit. So either you let me help you, or I’ll throw you over my shoulder and carry you out of here. It’s your choice.”

Her eyes narrow, lips pressing in a stubborn line. She should look ridiculous, with her hair messy like that and the black smudges under her eyes, but she doesn’t. She’s breathtakingly gorgeous, like always.

And you shouldn’t notice the way she looks. As a matter of fact, you shouldn’t notice her at all.

“You wouldn’t do that.”

I quirk my brow at her. “Do you want to try me?”

She opens her mouth as if she’s about to protest but changes her mind.

“I thought so.”

“God, I hate you.”

“The feeling’s mutual, doll.” I tug her across the hallway and down the stairs. The music is still blasting, and if it’s even possible more people have joined the party. Which is good since the last thing I need is for somebody to spot me leaving the party with Jade Cole and Nixon somehow finding out about it.

My leg throbs even stronger than before, jolts of pain spreading through my limb at the extra weight I’m carrying. For all the bravado back in the room, there was no way I’d be able to carry anybody with my leg hurting like that. Not that Jade needs to know that, so I bite the inside of my cheek, suck it up, and carry on.

A few people are standing on the front porch, talking, but none of them pay us any attention as I help Jade to my Mustang. By the time she’s in the passenger’s seat, I’m sweating like crazy, and my jaw is clenched so tight I’m surprised it didn’t snap.

I slowly make my way around the car, each step sending another blast of pain through my leg. Sliding my hand into my pocket, I open the bag inside of it and pull two pills out.

Not letting myself think about it, I toss them into my mouth and swallow. I’ve been taking so many painkillers ever since the accident that I barely notice them sliding down my throat.

Holding in the wince, I pull open the door and slide inside my car.

My attention darts to Jade. She’s leaning against the window, her hand covering her face. She must feel my eyes on her because she blinks, her gaze focusing on me.

“You didn’t have to save me, you know. I’d have figured it out.”

Yeah, because it looked just like she could deal with those two assholes all on her own.

“I’m no savior, doll” I turn on the key, starting the car. “Don’t go making me into something I’m not.”

Jade lets out a snort, “As if that’s possible.”

Shifting my attention forward, I maneuver my car onto the street. The radio is playing softly in the background as I navigate the streets to one of the buildings closer to campus.

“Do you have a ke—” I turn to Jade only to find her asleep next to me. “You’re shitting me, right?”

Her cheek is pressed against the window, lips slightly parted.

“Cole?” I call out, gently jabbing my finger in her side. But there’s nothing. No reaction whatsoever. “Doll?” I tried again, harder this time, but still, no result.

“Fucking hell.” I throw my head back and look at the ceiling, my curled fingers punching the steering wheel. Turning my head to the side, I watch a strand of hair fall on her face. Unable to resist it, I reach across the console and push it behind her ear. “What the hell should I do with you now?”

CHAPTERSEVEN

JADE

An annoying ringing snaps me out of my dreams. I moan in protest, turning to my other side, and pulling the cover over my face to stifle the noise that is making my head throb so hard it’s about to explode.
