Week zero.

The beginning of the season.

And the announcement of the starting lineup.

CHAPTEREIGHT

JADE

“I need coffee,” I say as a way of greeting. Sliding into one of the bar stools, I prop my elbows against the counter and drop my chin onto my palms, letting out a long sigh.

“A long day?” Yasmin asks, brows raised.

“Something like that. Do you have coffee in IV? I think that might be the best option at this point.”

My sister-in-law chuckles, “Afraid not, but I can hook you up with a double shot of espresso.”

I let out a sigh, “I guess that’ll have to do.”

The door to the kitchen opens, and a familiar redhead pops out. “What will have to do?”

Yasmin picks up one of the cups and goes to the coffee machine. “Somebody partied hard last night and needs caffeine.”

“I never mentioned anything about partying.”

“You’re telling me you stayed up studying the first week of classes?” Yasmin gives me a pointed look over her shoulder.

“No, definitely not.”

She chuckles, returning her attention to my coffee. “Didn’t think so.”

“But that doesn’t mean I was out partying.” Although, that was exactly what I’d been doing. “Maybe we had a girl’s night and stayed up until five in the morning.”

“Did you?”

“I mean, we did hang out…”

Yasmin places a lid over my cup and hands it to me, raising one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows.

“Before I went out,” I finish, grabbing the cup and taking a long sip.

My eyes fall shut as I practically inhale the black gold, waiting for that first jolt of energy to kick in.

“Damn, she’s even worse than you, Yas.” Alyssa shakes her head, her wide blue eyes on me. “Maybe even worse than Callie.”

I guess if I was worse than Callie, things must be really serious.

“I assume it’s not the right time to mention I’ll require a refill?” Yasmin bursts into laughter. “What? I still have one more class to go to, and I don’t think I slept more than five hours.”

Once I got home, I felt too jittery to be able to fall asleep. As if that was as easy as simply shutting your eyes. But nothing was that easy. More flashes of the evening started to come back to me. It’s all still pretty fuzzy, but I could connect the important bits, like having too much to drink, dancing, and the guys.

A shudder runs through me at the mere thought.

I definitely remembered the guys.

Worried, almost terrified, dark eyes flash in my mind. A deep line between his brows. Hard lips pressed in a tight line.

“Jade?”
