I blink, returning my attention to my friends, who are both looking at me expectantly. “Sorry, I got lost in my head for a little bit.”

Yasmin’s smile falls. “Are you okay? You look a bit pale.”

“I’m fine,” I wave her off, forcing a smile out. “Just tired. What I need is another coffee or two and ten hours of uninterrupted sleep. Not necessarily in that order.”

“Try having a baby. It’s like that, only every day.”

“Where is your baby?” I ask, grateful to be able to change the subject to something other than me.

Although Alyssa and I weren’t necessarily close, occasionally, we hung out in the same group, so I knew she had been pregnant. Hell, everybody knew she had been pregnant. It’s not something that goes unnoticed on a campus the size of Blairwood’s.

“She’s home with her daddy.” Just the mention of her daughter and boyfriend has a smile spreading over her face.

“How is she doing?”

“Good, fussy,” Alyssa rolls her eyes and gives a pointed look at Yas. “I swear you all spoil her too much, and she’s using every bit of it.”

“She’sfour monthsold!” Yasmin protests.

“Exactly!”

“Hey, don’t look at me.” Yasmin raises her hands defensively. “It’s all Maddox.”

“Especially him, but none of you are any better.” Alyssa shakes her head. “Always demanding to hold her. It’s not even strange that she doesn’t want to sleep if somebody’s not holding her.”

“I don’t see where the problem is.”

“Of course you don’t. The next time Edie wakes up in the middle of the night or startles every time I try to put her in her crib, I’ll bring her to you.”

“I thought we already established I’m the fun aunt. We’re here to help her wreak havoc.”

“Oh, really?” Aly narrows her eyes. “Well, you just wait, ‘cause payback is a bitch.”

I’m lucky that I didn’t take a sip of my coffee because it would be all over the counter by now because of the look of utter shock and astonishment on Yasmin’s face.

“You’re pregnant?!”

“God, no!” Yasmin protests, turning her attention to Aly. “Bite your tongue. I love Edie, but damn, I’m not ready for a baby. Not anytime soon.”

Aly shrugs as she opens the dishwasher and starts to empty it. “I didn’t exactly plan it either, but sometimes the best things that come in life are unexpected.”

My smile falls as her words ring in my mind. She’s right, occasionally, the unexpected becomes the best thing in your life, but more often than not, it’ll wreck you from the inside out.

“Nixon would be a good daddy, right Jade?” Alyssa wiggles her brows playfully.

“Oh, no, don’t get me in the middle of this. Besides, you know my thoughts on discussing my brother’s sex life. Not interested.”

“Oh, he’ll be an amazing dad. I’m not worried about that. Some time far, far, farin the future.”

Yas’s right about that. Nixon will be an amazing dad. He adores Yasmin with all he’s got, and I’ve seen him with Edie a few times. He’s smitten with her. All the guys are. Although, was that really ever a question? I’m half-convinced he wouldn’t mind that much if a baby came a little earlier, either.

Will I ever be able to meet it?Shaking my head, I push the thoughts away.

Noticing the time, I finish the last of my coffee. “Make me another one to go? I should really head to my next class, or I’ll be late.”

Yasmin grabs my cup. “You coming to the first game?”

“I wouldn’t miss it.”
