I watch as Nixon says goodbye and walks out of the bar before turning my attention to Jade, who’s still talking to the basketball player. Nixon’s words still ring in my head.

Is there something to it, or is he just exaggerating with his big-brother protectiveness? She seems fine. Like she usually is. Probably more perky than when she’s around me, but for all that I know, her smart-ass comments can be reserved especially for me.

I watch her finish off her drink and signal the waiter for another one. Which one was it? Second? Third?

The image of her being dragged up those stairs flashes in my head.

No, that wasn’t normal.

Sure, I’ve seen her drink before, but I never saw her blackout drunk like she was last evening.

The guy leans closer, way too close, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear as he whispers something to her. Jade throws her head back and laughs loud enough so I can hear it over the sound of music and the chatter of people.

Get a grip, Wentworth. She’s your best friend’s little sister.

Grabbing my beer, I take a pull from the bottle, only to find it empty.

Great, just my luck.

I look around but don’t find any waiters, so I push to my feet.

“You guys need anything? I’m going to the bar to grab a drink.”

I’m only half listening as they throw in their orders. Pushing through the crowd, I make my way to the bar. The girl behind the bar notices me instantly, the recognition flashing on her face as she makes her way toward me, making other people grumble in protest.

“What can I getcha, handsome?” She flashes me a megawatt smile and leans her elbows on the counter, the motion making her tits press together and show off her cleavage. But even that can’t keep my interest when laughter rings through the room.

I rattle off our order, my attention already going over my shoulder just in time to see Jade shoving the tall dude away playfully before slipping from the table and going to the back of the room where the bathrooms are.

Fingers brush against the back of my hand. “Anything else?”

“Huh?” I turn around to find the girl watching me expectantly. “No, that’s it. Can you take it back to the football table?”

“Yeah. You sure you—”

“Thanks.” Pulling out the money, I place the bill on the counter. “That should be able to cover it,” with a flash of a smile, I push away from the bar and go toward the bathrooms.

I should join the guys before they start asking questions. The idiots are nosier than a group of old ladies, but there’s this pull I can’t resist that’s driving me forward.

I’m just rounding the corner when I bump into somebody. My hands go to the person’s shoulders, steadying them.

“I’m so—”

The words die on my lips as her scent hits me first. Lavender and something more, I’m not sure what exactly. Then she tilts her head back, and those blue eyes are fixed on mine.

“What are you doing here?”

“I think the better question is, what are you doing?”

Jade watches me for a moment before shoving my hand away. “Excuse me? What gives you the right—”

“I have all the right in the world if you’re flirting with one of my teammates…”

“This is about…” she lets out a loud groan. “Oh, for fuck’s sake! We weretalking. Not flirting. Not that it’s any ofyourbusiness either way.”

“You can’t go around messing with my teammate’s heads. He needs to be concentrating on the game.”

“Well, the only football player I see around isyou.” She jabs her finger into my chest. “And as far as I remember, I haven’t invited you here, so why don’t you go somewhere where they want you? Like maybe that bartenderyou’vebeen flirting with.” She pokes me again, that arrogant brow rising.
