“Same to you, Wentworth.”

Zane removes his attention from his girlfriend long enough to narrow his eyes at us. “I still don’t get how you two live together and not kill each other.”

“My thoughts exactly,” Nixon says, joining the conversation. Then, as if it’s an afterthought, he takes in our group. “Hey, where’s Jade? Didn’t you say she’d come?”

Yasmin purses her lips. “She’s probably around here somewhere.”

My whole body stiffens at the mention of her name, every muscle taut. I didn’t realize she would have been out there in the stands. Then again, I’m not sure why I’m surprised.

I vaguely remember the scrawny girl coming to a few of Nixon’s games back when we were freshmen. Not that I paid her much attention then.

Just like you shouldn’t do it now if you don’t want to lose your head.

Does it stop me from looking for her? No, it doesn’t.

“She went to get a drink,” Rei says, joining in the conversation.

“Of course she did,” Nixon mutters, his jaw clenching. “I swear, that girl will be the death of me.”

“Oh, hush.” Yasmin slaps him on the chest. “Like you were any better just a few years ago.”

“But…” Nixon starts to protest, only Yasmin puts her finger over his lips to shut him up.

“No buts. Don’t be a patronizing dick, and let the girl enjoy her college years.”

Finishing what’s left in my cup, I wrap my fingers around the plastic.

“I’m going to grab a drink,” I say to no one in particular.

“Grab me one, will ya?” Spencer asks.

Nodding, I slip through the crowd, making my way to the terrace where I saw the kegs earlier. It feels like there are even more people than just moments earlier. Some are dancing, some are talking, and some are playing games.

There are so many people that even though we’re outside, the air is stifling. I try to catch a glimpse of that familiar stubborn face, but since it’s dark, it’s hard for me to decipher one person from another. A few guys stop me as I refill my glass, wanting to congratulate me on being back on the team.

I turn around, ready to get back to my friends, when I see her. All thoughts leave my mind the moment my eyes fall on her.

Jade Cole.

And she’s not alone.

Oh, no. No one other than fucking Joshua Sullivan is standing next to her.

They’re standing in the shadows, closer to the trees. Jade throws her head back, laughing at whatever that idiot said to her, all that thick, dark hair swaying with the movement.

My fingers ball into fists by my sides, jaw clenching as I just stand there and stare.

Does he have a death wish or something?

I gave him a friendly warning because if Nixon were to see it, the warning wouldn’t be so kind. No, he’d probably break the guy’s nose first and then start asking questions.

Jade reaches forward, her fingers brushing against his forearm casually.

Not flirting, my ass.

What the hell does she even see in the idiot?

Before I know what I’m doing, I slip between the group of girls and move toward them.
