Nixon wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. “I…”

“No,” I shake my head. “Do I have to remind you that I went to high school with you, and I know exactly how big of a player you were?” That makes him shut up. “So, no, Nixon, I don’t want to hear another word of this. As I told you, I’m a big girl, and I can take care of myself. And if I want to let a guy sink his teeth in my neck, I have every right to do so.” I glance toward my sister-in-law. “No offense, Yas.”

“Oh, none taken.” She elbows Nixon in the side. “I know very well what a player he was before.”

“Before,” he grunts. Turning to her, he grabs her hand and brings it to his lips. “Before you. Before us.”

A knot forms in my throat at the sight of the two of them. I’m happy for Nixon. I really am. He deserves all the love he can have. But there is this other part of me, an envious part, that’s jealous that he’s moving on when I can’t seem to run away from my past. From my demons.

“Well, there’s no before for me. Just now. So kindly stay out of my freaking business and concentrate on your wife. And you know, maybe giving me some nieces and nephews.” I turn to the server, who finally comes, placing the trays with food our friends ordered on the table.

“What?” Prescott asks. “You guys are trying for…”

“I think the word you’re looking for is kids, Wentworth,” I say cheerily and take a moment to watch his eyes grow wide before turning my attention to the server. “I’ll have a blueberry pancake, please.”

“Jade’s joking,” Yasmin scolds, digging into her omelet. “We’re not trying for anything. Now, if only Maddox would share…”

“Nope.” Just then, the baby starts fussing. Aly reaches for her, but Maddox shakes his head and gets up, turning Edie, so she’s snuggled into the crook of his neck and gently patting her back. “You eat. I’ve got her.”

My gaze drops from Maddox to the man sitting next to me. “At least there’s one man here who’s not afraid of commitments.”

“This doesn’t have anything to do with commitment. College is supposed to be fun, and babies are…” his words trail off as he watches Maddox. “Babies.”

I burst into laughter, “Babies are babies? That’s the best you can come up with?”

“Hey, don’t look at me. I’m not good with kids.”

“Why does that not surprise me?”

Yasmin laughs, “Pot meet kettle.”

“What?”

“You haven’t even held her once!”

“Between you and Callie, it’s not like I had a chance.”

“Excuses, excuses.”

At the mention of her name, the blonde finally looks up from her phone. “Callie what?”

Thankfully, my and Prescott’s food arrives shortly, and we change the subject to classes and football as we finish our breakfast. I’m only half listening because Prescott’s arm is brushing against mine the whole time as we eat, making me a nervous wreck. I keep expecting somebody to say… something, but nobody does.

As we’re leaving Macy’s, Nixon throws his arm around me and pulls me into his side. “I didn’t mean to piss you off earlier. I just worry about you.”

“And while I appreciate it, you really need to stop. I’m a big girl.”

“I know, but you’ll always be my little sister.”

I roll my eyes at him. “Don’t be corny.”

“It’s the truth.” Nixon looks over his shoulder. “Hey, Wentworth! You good with dropping Jade off at her place?”

“Nixon!” I chide.

The last thing I want is to be cooped up in a car with Prescott after spending the last hour pressed against the hard line of his body. Or have any possible conversation that might take place.

“Sure thing.”
