The way Sullivan looks at her has nothing to do with them being classmates and everything with him wanting more. How couldn’t he see that? For all his talk about keeping her protected, he’s blind to some things.

You should be grateful for it because if he finds out what you did…

He won’t find out because it was a one-time thing. It won’t happen again. It can’t. I won’t let it.

“What’s your deal with Sullivan, anyway?” Nixon asks, breaking me out of my thoughts.

I look down at my plate, shoving some of the veggies and rice from one side of my plate to the other. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Bullshit.”

My head snaps up at the sharp tone of his voice. “There’s been something going on between you two since the day you returned. Is it the fact that he took your spot?”

“You’re imagining things.”

But, of course, Nixon continues as if I haven’t said a word. “It was just until you came back. You know that? The guy’s decent but nowhere near as good as you. Hell, if you were interested in going pro, you could totally do that.”

“I’m not interested in going pro. What I’m interested in is winning this season, and if we don’t get our shit in order, that’s not going to happen.” I look down at my half-eaten plate. “I’m going to the library.”

“You barely ate anything.”

“Not hungry.”

“Can I have those?”

Spencer points at the chocolate chip cookies still on my plate. I’ll never understand how he managed to keep his mouth shut this whole time. They’re my favorite, and the ladies in the cafeteria know it, so they always sneak me one extra.

I glare at him. “I’m taking those for later.”

My roommate pouts, “I thought you were not hungry.”

“That’s why they’re for later. Get your own damn cookies, Spence.”

“Asshole.”

“Dickhead.”

Nixon shakes his head. “You two are weird.”

“Takes one to know one.” I wave at them over my shoulder. “Later.”

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

JADE

“Thank God you’re still here!”

I look over my shoulder to find Vicky, one of my classmates, standing in the doorway of the dark room, panting.

Letting go of the negative I’ve been working on, I grab a towel to clean my hands as I turn to face her. “What’s up?”

“Can you please, please, please help me?” she asks, still breathing hard.

“Sure.” I give her a concerned look; she looks like she’s ready to pass out. “Is everything alright? You should take a few deep breaths.”

Vicky shakes her head. “No time.”

“Well, you won’t tell me anything if you pass out.” I give her a pointed look. Vicky nods and leans her hands against her thighs, sucking in a long breath. I watch her as she repeats the motion a few times until her breathing is steadier before she straightens.
