A hand presses against my chest, and a warm breath touches my face.

“Are you crazy?!” Jade hisses.

I blink my eyes open, her face coming into view. My vision is slightly blurry, so it takes me a few tries until that familiar scowl comes into focus. Not like I couldn’t have lived without it.

Jade jabs her finger into my chest, drawing my attention. “Do you have a death wish?”

“I could ask you the same thing.” I try to shift, but a jolt of pain spreads through my leg. I bite back a hiss, forcing the words out, “If you weren’t so stubborn…”

“Me?” she shifts on top of me, her palm pressing against my chest as she sits upright, her pelvis rubbing against mine. “I’m the stubborn one?”

“Yes, you,” I groan loudly and grab her hips. “Will you stop moving already? Wasn’t it enough that you beat me…”

“Beat you?”

“Yes, beat me. I’m pretty sure I have bruises since you aren’t exactly light.”

Her lips parted, those stormy eyes widening in outrage. I expect her to rip me a new one in three, two, o—

“What do you two think you’re doing?”

We both look up only to find a very pissed Nixon standing above us, his arms crossed over his chest as he glares at us. Or, well, more precisely, me. “Well?”

“Hey, don’t look at me!” I protest. “She fell on top of me, not the other way around.”

“Of course, it’s my fault!” Jade grumbles, slamming her clenched fist against me.

“It is! If it weren’t for your stubborn ass, the ass still sitting on top of me, by the way, none of this would have happened.”

“Wha—” Jade sucks in a breath, her cheeks heating as she realizes I’m right. Or maybe she can just feel my boner poking her, not that there is anything that I can do about that. “Ugh, I hate you,” she mutters and quickly scrambles to her feet.

“Of course you do,” I roll my eyes exaggeratedly, just because I know it’ll piss her off even more. “I was just trying to do a good deed and help you so this very thing wouldn’t happen. But did you listen?” I lean against my elbows, my muscles protesting the movement. Tomorrow’s practice will be a bitch. “Of-fucking-course not. Damn woman.”

With some effort, I manage to push to my feet only for Jade to jab her finger into my chest with every word she says: “I. Don’t. Remember. Asking. For. Your. Help.”

I grab her wrist to stop her from poking me. “Will you stop it already?”

“Okay, okay, okay, will you both stop it?” Nixon gets in between us; his face turned toward his sister.

See? I’m not the only one who realizes she’s the problematic one out of the two of us.

Jade glares at me over her brother’s shoulder. “I’ll stop it when he admits he’s the one in the wrong.”

“I invited him, Smalls. Will you chill already?”

“And who gave you permission to do that?” Jade tilts her head to the side and crosses her arms over her chest.

“I didn’t realize I needed fucking permission.” Nixon says without missing a beat. “I figured you wanted this done as soon as possible.”

“I do, but between you, Zane, and Mason, we have more than enough help. You didn’t have to invitehim.”

The way she says him, you’d think I’m the devil reincarnated.

I dust off my pants. “Trust me, doll, if I knew he was asking me to come and helpyou,I’d have found a reason to stay away.”

Jade presses her lips in a tight line and grinds her teeth. “And that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you all along.” She grabs that damn chair off the ground. “Now that we’ve got that figured out. Go to hell, Wentworth.”

With that, she marches toward the building without a backward glance.
