Went out of his way, my ass. The whole point of him stopping here is because it wasonhis way. Not out of it. Besides, nobody forced him to do shit. I’d actually prefer it if he didn’t come at all, but if I say that, he’ll do the exact opposite, which is the only reason why I keep my mouth shut.

“I just thought I saw somebody.”

“One of your groupies?” Dad shakes his head disapprovingly. “You should seriously stop messing around and focus on what matters.”

“And what exactly matters, Dad?” I ask, gritting my teeth to try and keep my voice low. “You think my career choice sucks, and you just spent the last half an hour complaining about how bad my game is.”

“You’ll watch your mouth, boy. I’m still your father and the only reason why you’re where you are.”

And here we go again. Dropping my fork on the plate, I grab the glass of Jack and coke, taking a sip from it.

Dad’s mouth twists in distaste. “You shouldn’t be drinking that.”

I look pointedly at his glass of whiskey. “Hypocritical much?”

“You shouldn’t be talking to your father like that.” Mom’s words are so soft it takes me a moment to grasp that she spoke out loud.

I turn to look at her, but her gaze is pointed at her still-full plate. She shifts her food from one side to the other. There is an ache in my chest as I watch her. She’s lost some weight since the last time I saw her. She’s always been slender and petite, but now she’s all skin and bones. Her blonde hair is lifeless, and her skin is dry. There is nothing of the woman that I remember from my childhood.

Look at me,I urge her silently.Just once. Look at me.

It’s useless, though. Even if I said it out loud, it wouldn’t make any difference. It’s been years, yearssince she looked at me.

Really looked at me.

Nine years to be exact.

Even in those rare moments when her eyes meet mine, it’s like she’s looking through me, not at me. Not that I can blame her. Not after what I’ve done. What I’ve cost her.

“Oh, no, Molly, let the boy talk. I’m sure he has a lot to say. He always thinks he knows the best. That he’s better than us.”

His words are like a blow, and I take every single one he throws at me.

“I never thought I was better than you.”

“Your actions have proven otherwise.

My fingers ball into fists under the table.

“Nothing to say now, Prescott?” He leans closer, his voice dropping low. “That’s because you know I’m telling the truth. Because you know how reckless you are. You know that it’syourfault. You kill everyone you love.”

If he wanted to punish me, he knew exactly the right way to do it. The worst part is he’s right. What happened seven years ago was my fault. And I’ll have to carry it for the rest of my life with me.

You kill everyone you love.

I grab my drink and down the rest of it in one go, wishing it was pure whiskey instead. “I’m done here.”

I push to my feet, my chair screeching over the floor, and make my way out of the room. My dad’s words still ring in my head, loud and clear, as I make my way out of the restaurant and toward my car. Pulling the keys out of my pocket, I unlock the car just when I hear footsteps coming after me.

“Prescott! Wait.”

My hand freezes on the handle at the sound of her words. She’s the last person I expected to go after me. “You should get back to your date.”

“What happened inside? You just stormed out—”

“Jade…” Her name comes out like a growl. “Get back inside. Now.”

“Like hell I am.” Soft fingers wrap around my arm, and she tugs me toward her. Those stormy blue eyes fix on mine, and I can feel my throat tighten. “What happened—”
