“What happened is none of your business.”

“It is my business since you’re clearly upset, and you’re about to get in your car and drive, God only knows where.”

“Worried about me, doll?”

That familiar fire blazes in her irises. “Fine.” She shoves me away. “Be a dick about it. I was just trying to be nice. But apparently, it’s wasted on you.”

She turns on her heels, ready to march off, but at the last second, I grab her wrist and tug her to me. Her body collides with mine, and I can feel a zap of electricity course through me at the touch.

“Don’t you know already?” With my free hand, I tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. My fingers graze her cheek, and I swear I can feel her tremble under my touch. I lean closer, my voice lowering as I whisper, “There is nothing nice about me.”

“You’re—”

Before she can say anything else, my fingers slide to the nape of her neck, and I pull her to me.

My mouth crashes against hers in a hard kiss. I’m angry. At my parents, at her, at myself, and she’s here, so I lay it all out on her. Jade sucks in a breath, giving me an opening to slide my tongue into her mouth. Our tongues tangle in a battle of wills, sucking and swirling. Jade presses her hand against my chest, and for a moment, I think she’ll push me away, slap me, something, but her fingers tighten around me as she pulls me closer, returning every swipe of my mouth over hers with one of her own.

Fuck.

Breaking the kiss, I pull back. My breathing is ragged as I open my eyes and find her watching me, eyes wide, cheeks pink.

“We shouldn’t be doing this,” I pant but don’t make an attempt to take a step back.

Hurt dances in her eyes at my words, but she clenches her jaw. Closing the distance between us, so close her lips brush against mine, she whispers, the challenge clear in her voice: “Then don’t do it. Don’t kiss me.”

Do I back down?

Fuck to the no.

I turn us around, so she’s caged against my car and kiss her once again. My body presses against her, feeling all those lush curves as I devour her mouth with mine like I’ll die if I don’t kiss her. Like she’s the air I need to breathe. Like she’s mine.

Mine.

The word echoes in my mind, loud and damning.

Cursing, I pull back as quickly as possible, leaving a healthy distance between us.

My tongue darts out, sliding over my lower lip.

What the hell am I doing?

I grab her hand and push her toward the restaurant.

“Prescott…”

Plastering a smile on my face, I open my car. “Something to remember when you go back inside to your perfect little date. Can he make you feel like I do, doll?”

Sliding inside the driver’s seat, I close the door behind me. The last thing I see before I speed away is those stormy eyes glaring after me.

CHAPTERTWENTY

JADE

“What happened with Wentworth?” Michael asks, his words snapping me out of my thoughts.

“What?” I look up, realizing we’ve arrived at my apartment while I’d been lost in my own head.

“You went after him, and then when you came back, you just seemed off.”
