“Since when?”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, growing irritated by the second. “Since when, what?”

“Since when do you not believe in happily-ever-afters?”

Since my dad left my mom when he found out she had cancer.

Since my dad and my brother left me to deal with everything on my own.

Since I found my boyfriend cheating on me with my best friend when I needed them the most.

Since my mom died.

But I don’t say any of those out loud.

“Since the only thing love brings you is heartache.”

Prescott just watches me for a minute as if he isn’t sure what to do. Finally, he nods. “Okay.”

“Great.”

“Great.” He looks around my room. “What now?”

What now?

I tighten the grip I have on the blanket and tip my chin toward the window. “Now you can get your ass out of here.”

“You’re joking, right?”

His stupefied face makes me want to burst into laughter. You’d think I asked him to do something outrageous, like dance naked in the middle of the school cafeteria.

I raise my brow at him. “Do I look like I’m joking?”

“Jade…”

I turn my back on him and go toward the bathroom. “Don’t fall on your ass on your way out. I’m not calling the paramedics or explaining what you were trying to do.”

“Seriously? That’s the only thing you have to say?”

“Yes, seriously, Wentworth. We just agreed, sex only.” I look over my shoulder. “You can’t go breaking our agreement on the first night. Which one is it, window or door?”

I’m about to push the door open, but before I can slip inside, Prescott’s fingers wrap around my wrist, and he pulls me back.

“Fine, have at it.”

I let out a snort. “As if I need your permission.”

“I’m leaving but let’s make one thing clear first. You’re mine, Jade.Mine.” He presses his mouth against mine in a fierce kiss before quickly pulling back. “And I don’t like sharing.”

With that, he walks away, leaving me breathless as he climbs out my window and disappears into the night.

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

PRESCOTT

“Do I smell bacon?” Spencer asks as he enters the kitchen. He drops his duffle bag and goes straight for the pan, reaching for my bacon. Before he can take it, I slap him over the hand with the wooden spoon. “Ouch. What was that for?”

“Get your own breakfast,” I grumble, taking a sip of my coffee before adding the eggs to the pan.
