“Can’t really avoid him considering he’s my brother’s best friend and teammate, now can I?”
“I guess not.”
“Can you imagine Wentworth and Jade getting stuck in a cabin somewhere? Damn, I’d pay to watch that show play out.”
“They’d either kill each other or…”
I launch across the desk and cover Grace’s mouth with my hand. “Don’t you even dare say it.”
Grace mumbles something incoherently, but my hand over her mouth stifles the noise.
“No. I’m not listening. I’m grabbing my things now, and then I’ll order a refill before going to the library. I don’t want to hear one word about this. The next time I accept only a girls’ night out. With drinks. Alotof drinks. Clear?”
Grace nods her head.
“Good.” I pull my hand back. “Now that’s settled. I’ll see you guys later.”
I start to pick up my things, ready to get out of here.
“I need to grab some books in the library too,” Penny says, her fingers tightening around Henry’s harness as she picks up her bag. “Mind if I join you?”
“As long as you don’t mention you know who.”
Penny lets out a chuckle, “It sounds like you’re talking about Lord Voldemort or something.”
“Or something,” I mutter. “Let me just grab a refill.”
I get in line, which thankfully isn’t that long, and ask the guy working the counter for another mocha. Grabbing my drink, I make my way outside, where Penny is waiting for me. A chill runs down my spine as a light breeze whizzes by. Autumn is in full swing, and I’m not sure I am ready for it.
“Ready to go?”
“Sure.” Penny gives Henry a command, and I walk in step with the two of them. “For what’s it worth, I think you and Prescott would be good together.”
I can’t help myself. I burst into laughter.Good together? Yeah, right.“Good at killing each other, maybe.”
“No, I really mean it. You two bicker like an old married couple, but it’s not the end of the world. You kind of remind me of Miguel and Becky.”
“Miguel and Becky?” I ask, the names sounding slightly familiar, although I’m not sure from where.
“Emmett and Kate’s best man and maid of honor.”
“Oh, right. They’re together?”
“Well, they’re working on it.” Penny’s brows furrow. “I think? With the two of them, you can never really know. But they’ve always been fighting over one thing or another.”
“That sounds promising,” I comment dryly. “Also, I thought we agreed not to talk about this.”
She gives me a sheepish smile. “Yeah, well. I was with you guys in Hawaii.”
I give her a side glance. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“I might be blind, but I’m not stupid, you know. There is...”
My phone buzzes, and I pull it out, grateful for the interruption. “Sorry, I have to take this.” Hitting the answer button, I bring the phone to my ear. “Yeah?”
There is a beat of silence on the other end to the point I wonder if the other person hung up. But just as I’m about to pull the phone away to check if the call is still connected, I hear a raspy: “Jade?”
My whole body freezes at the sound of the voice I haven’t heard in over a year, ever since he walked away from me without a backward glance. For the second time no less.
