Fool me once. Shame on you.

Fool me twice. Shame on me.

“Why are...”

“No,” I say, my voice pure ice as my fingers grip the phone harder. “You don’t get to call me. We have nothing to talk about.”

“Ja—”

He tries again, but I hang up before he can get anything else out.

“Jade?” A hand touches my shoulder, making me snap out of my thoughts to find Penny standing in front of me, a worried expression on her face. “Are you okay?”

“I...” I run my hand over my face, pushing my hair back. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“Yes. It was a wrong number.”

If Penny thinks I’m lying, she doesn’t call me on it.

“Let’s go,” I add quickly, not wanting to give her a chance to ask anything about this again. “I really need to start working on that essay for our English Lit class.”

“Start?” Penny’s brows shoot up. “On the one that’s due tomorrow?”

“The very one.”

“How much do you have done?”

“Zero.”

At the look of horror on Penny’s face, I can’t help but laugh out loud. My whole body relaxes, and for the first time since I answered the phone, I can inhale deeply.

“It’s not that bad. I’ll get it done before the due date.”

“You have like a few hours left!”

“It’s not like I need more. If I start too early, I usually overthink it for too long. Don’t worry.”

“Don’t worry she says. You’re crazy, Jade.”

“What can I say? I like living on the edge. What are you working on?” I ask, pulling open the door to the library so Penny and Henry can enter before me.

“I’m working on an essay for my music history class.”

The librarian looks up from the table as we enter the main space, her eyes falling on Henry. Just then, my phone starts to vibrate loudly, and that hawk’s gaze turns to me, her lips twisting in a disapproving scowl.

Turning my back on her, I pull my phone out, shifting it to silent, when the message on top of the screen catches my attention.

Unknown: You can’t keep ignoring me, Jade.

Oh, I damn well could and am planning to. There is nothing that I want to say to him and nothing that he can say to me that’ll change my mind.

After all, he was the one who walked awaytwice, not the other way around.

“Jade?” Penny places her hand over mine. “Wanna go and grab a table?”
