Page 112 of Kiss Me Tenderly

I sit upright in bed, my hand covering my gaping mouth as the memory flashes in my head as real as if it just happened.

Lifting the covers, I bury my face in them and let out a frustrated scream, not that it helps me feel any better.

Henry barks, nuzzling his face into the covers. I let them drop and press my forehead against the top of his head.

“What was I thinking, Henry?” I murmur, rubbing his short fur.

I wasn’t thinking, that’s the problem.

He kissed me, and all rational thoughts left my mind, and there was only him. Only the feel of his lips pressed against mine. His scent. His touch.

And it felt good.

So damn good.

Tomorrow, Birdy. Kiss me tomorrow, and I’ll give you everything you want.

Could I do it?

Did I want to?

I press my finger over my lower lip. My mouth still feels tingly from where his stubble scratched at my skin. Or maybe it was all in my head. Maybe…

My alarm goes off, startling me.

“Shit, we have to get ready for class, Henry.”

Pushing away the covers, I jump out of bed and start getting ready for class. But even though I should hurry, I can’t help but pause once I leave my apartment and listen for any sounds coming from the place next door, my heart beating wildly in my chest. But there is nothing.

“What are you looking for?” Enrique asks, startling me.

Damn, I was totally caught.

“Nothing,” I mutter quickly, maybe a little too quickly, lowering my head and focusing on packing my books into my backpack.

“This is the third time that you’ve looked over your shoulder.”

“You know I can’t actuallysee.”

It’s a lousy excuse, but it’s the first thing that came to mind.

“That doesn’t mean you aren’t searching for somebody.” There is a short pause. “Is it that dude? What was his name again? Brandy?”

“It’s Bash,” I correct, although I’m pretty sure that Enrique doesn’t need me to tell him that.

“Whatever. He’s not here.”

“Oh.” I bite the inside of my cheek, trying to hide my disappointment, although a part of me already knew that. I couldn’t feel him, not like I usually do. There is just something different in the way he watches me. The weight of his stare on me doesn’t make me uncomfortable. Quite the opposite. I could feel soft tingles of anticipation running down my spine every time his eyes landed on me. Almost like a physical touch. Almost but not quite.

I didn’t know if I was disappointed or relieved.

Probably a little bit of both.

“What’s your deal with him anyway? You seemed pretty pissed at him when he dragged you out of that party yesterday.”

“I was, but then we…” My throat bobs as I weigh my words. “Talked.” Pulling my bag over my shoulder, I tap the side of my leg. “C’mon, Henry, time to go.” Henry slips from underneath the table and slides into his harness. “I’ll see you soon?”
