“Sure.”

With one last smile at Enrique, I give Henry the command to find the exit.

Loud laughter grabs my attention just as we descend the stairs.

“You should have seen the way she was clinging to him,” Lilian cackles. “Pa-the-tic. I don’t see what he sees in her.”

My steps falter, hair prickles my nape. As always, she’s not trying to keep quiet.

“Well, there must besomethingshe’s giving him to keep his attention,” another voice adds.

Lilian snorts. “A goody-two-shoes like her? Hardly.”

My fingers tighten around the harness, and I can’t help but wonder if they’re talking about me and Sebastian. Did she tell them he’s here? Knowing her? She probably blabbed it to half the school the moment she realized it.

Was that why he wasn’t in class today? Was he trying to stay away until the rumors died down?

Shaking my head, I focus on the task at hand. “Henry, forward.”

There is a bite in the air as I exit the building, so I tug my sweater tighter around me. Since I have some free time, I decide to go and grab coffee before my next class. The Tylenol helped with the headache, but after two classes, the throbbing behind my temples grew stronger again.

The bell rings as I enter Cup It Up, the scent of coffee and sweets filling the air. Soft music is playing in the background, but the chatter is minimal. And sure enough, Henry leads me all the way to the counter.

“Well, look who’s alive!”

Following the sound of the voice, I turn to the left. “Jade?”

“Yes, Jade. Your best friend, who you’ve been ignoring all day. I texted you like fifty times since last night.”

“You did?” I pull out my phone, and sure enough, there are messages upon messages of Jade checking in. “Sorry, I woke up late and had to hurry to my class, so I didn’t get a chance to look at my phone until now.”

“Well, for all I know, you could have been killed and left in a ditch somewhere.”

“Ignore her,” Yasmin joins in. “She’s cranky when she’s worried.”

“I really am sorry.” I tug at the harness, crossing the short distance to the high-top chairs next to the counter where Jade’s sitting.

I pat it to make sure it’s empty before climbing up and giving Henry the command to slide underneath. “I didn’t mean to worry you.”

“Then maybe text me next time you get home?”

“I’ll try my best. Last night I wasn’t really, umm…” I scratch at the back of my neck, unsure of how to put it into words nicely without making Jade even more worried. “Capable of texting?”

“What?” Jade turns to me, her legs bumping into mine under the table. “I knew I shouldn’t have let him take you like that. Did he even make sure you got home safely? Because if not, I swear…”

“He took me home.” I place my hand over her knee, giving her a reassuring squeeze.

“What else did he do?”

The heat slams into my cheeks as I remember the kiss.

“Penelope Adams!” Jade yells, slapping me over the hand.

“Ouch,” I pull my hand back, glaring at her. “Was that really necessary?”

“Oh, no, you don’t. What happened when you left the party? I wanna knowallthe details.”

Of course she did. This is Jade we’re talking about.
