Her eyes widen, her cheeks turning a deep burgundy color. Laughter wants to escape me, but it soon turns into more coughing.

I press my palm against my chest as my body shakes from the coughing fit. Then a hand lands on my back, rubbing softly between my shoulder blades. Penelope murmurs gently until my coughing stops.

“That’s what you get for joking around.”

“It wasn’t a joke; it was a true statement. I guess I could just go commando.”

“W-what?! No, that’s… Just no.”

“Why? It’s not like you can see me anyway.”

“You can’t sleep in my bed naked.”

“You have any better ideas?”

“I—” Her mouth falls open, but no words come out. “Whatever, I’m going to get you some tea.”

She scurries out of her room. Shaking my head—a mistake that intensifies pounding behind my temples—I remove the wet underwear and slide down onto the mattress.

Henry looks up, clearly not happy that I’m disturbing him. With a glare in my direction, he makes his way to the bottom of the bed, so I pull the covers over me, letting out a long sigh.

While the shower has helped a little with the fever and chills, now I feel completely drained.

I’m not sure how long Penelope’s gone, but the next thing I know, someone is shaking my shoulder, making me realize that I must have dozed off for a moment.

“Drink this.”

“You’re bossy.”

She points her finger at me. “You better remember that.”

“Fine; I’m drinking.”

The steam is coming from the cup she’s holding, a straw peeking from the cup. I lean closer, wrapping my mouth around the straw and take a small sip. The sweet liquid burns my tongue, but it feels good for my raw and aching throat, so I drink some more.

“Happy?”

“Yes.” She stands up. “I’ll just go drop this o—”

My hand jolts forward faster than I’d imagine is possible at this very moment, my fingers wrapping around her wrist as I hold her in place. “Don’t leave.”

“Sebastian, I need—”

“Please.”

With a sigh, she places the cup on the nightstand before she sits back down on the edge of the bed, pulling the blanket up and tucking me underneath it. “I’m not going anywhere.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

SEBASTIAN

Shifting, I wrap my arms tighter around the pillow, the scent of roses tickling my nose. I snuggle deeper in the warmth of it, inhaling the familiar scent. So fucking sweet. Like Birdy. It’s almost like she’s here. Like—

My eyes flash open, the back of the blonde head appearing right in front of me. I blink a few times, taking in the space around me before my eyes return to the woman sleeping in my arms.

Penelope.

I’m in Penelope’s room.
