“I mean, he didn’t take his shirt off before leaving the place, so I’d only assume that’s how he woke up,” Jade continues without missing a beat.

“He wasn’t… I…”

“Oh, stop it,” Grace interjects. “It’s not like Penelope can see it one way or the other. He could walk around naked for all to see, and she’d be none the wiser.”

“She’s right about that one,” I admit. Clearing my throat, I grab my water bottle. “Hell, some days I walk around my room shirtless with my curtains open. Kate tried to warn me a few times, but I keep forgetting to check before I change.”

“So, what you want to say is that you werebothwalking around your apartment naked?”

I’m just taking a sip of my water, but her words make me choke on a swallow.

“Jade!” Grace chastises as I cough a few times and wipe my palm over my mouth. “Was that really necessary?”

“I’m just trying to figure out what happened! You can’t tell me you aren’t interested. She was closed off inside her apartment, in herbedroom, no less, with her teenage crush, nursing him back to health. Besides, vision is overrated when you cantouchall those muscles.”

You never have to be afraid to touch me.

My teeth sink into my lower lip, warmth spreading over my cheeks as I remember the smoothness of his skin, the raspy feel of the stubble covering his jaw, and the heat of his skin as my hands explored his body.

“Penelope Adams! What happened in that apartment?”

“I—” My words end up hanging in the air just as my phone starts vibrating. “I should probably pick that up. It could be important.”

But of course, that has the opposite reaction from what I’m hoping.

“Is thathim?”

My mouth opens, but no sound comes out. The truth is, I didn’t know who it was, and now a part of me was afraid to open the message.

“I think I’ll just—”

I start to grab my phone, but Jade’s faster, picking it just under my nose.

“Hey!” I protest. “Give that back.”

“It is him! He asked when you’re coming home.”

“Jade…” I try to reach for the phone. Not an easy task when you can’t see what you’re reaching for, and the last thing I want to do is punch Jade in the process, although a part of me thinks it would serve her right.

“Let’s see…”

She can’t mean—

“You’re not texting him back, are you?”

“Of course I am. We can’t leave him hanging, can we? Maybe I should ask him what happened. See what he has to say.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“I wouldn’t need to if you would just tell us what happened. I knew something was going on. There is just something different about you. Right, Grace?”

“What?” I lift my hand, touching my cheek. “Do I have something on my face?”

“You don’t have anything on your face, don’t worry,” Grace reassures me.

“But there is that look in her eyes. It’s almost like they sparkle. Just look at her. And she’s blushing too.”

“Am not,” my answer is automatic, although I’m convinced my face is burning under their scrutinizing eyes, but I refuse to back down.
