SEBASTIAN

“Is there a specific reason why you’re acting like a grumpy asshole tonight?” Seraphina’s voice comes through the speaker.

My brows pull together. “I’m not acting like a grumpy asshole.”

“Your guitar would beg to differ. You’ve been plucking at those strings like you’re thinking of pulling them out.” There is a short pause, my plucking the only answer she gets. Seraphina sighs. “I thought the whole creating thing was going better.”

“It is going better,” I bite out. “I’m playing, aren’t I?”

“Well, you don’t seemhappyabout it, now do you?” she throws right back.

Letting out a groan, I drop the guitar in my lap and run my hand over my face. “Why am I even talking to you?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because you’re an annoying asshole stuck home alone on a Monday night?”

There is a completely different reason why I’m not happy, and it has nothing to do with music and everything to do with a certain woman. Since we only had one class together, I tried texting her earlier to see when she was coming home, only to get brushed off.

Sebastian:

When will you be home?

I was thinking of ordering us some takeout.

Any preferences?

Birdy:

Girl’s night.

Like seriously, how many girls’ nights can a group of friends have? Not that I didn’t like that she had friends. I did. I liked seeing her interact with them. Liked seeing that she had people in her corner. I just wanted her to be here. With me.

After spending the whole weekend with her, even though mostly incapacitated, but still, my place has never felt more empty. Totally lifeless. And I couldn’t not notice the gaping difference between our lives.

Penelope had a life. She had friends and family who loved her, and she was doing things that made her happy.

There was only one person who I considered a friend. She was on the other coast, and most days, I didn’t even understand how she endured my asshole ways.

“Don’t be sassy, Sera.”

“Don’t be a dick, Bash,” she throws back without missing a beat. “Seriously, if I didn’t know better, I’d think you’re sulking.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, cursing at myself for calling her. But it was either that or this annoying silence that I couldn’t even fill with music, no matter how much I tried. Nothing could take my mind off the fact that Birdy wasn’t across the hall but out there somewhere, having a good time with her friends.

“Oh, my God! You are sulking!”

I let my hand drop and grumble: “Am not.”

Seraphina’s light laughter spills from the other side of the line. “You totally are!”

Is it too late to throw the damn thing across the room? Knowing my luck, the phone will be intact, and I’ll still be able to hear her snickering at me.

“Let me guess, your little Birdy gave you the boot, and now you don’t know what to do with yourself?”

How the fuck did she know?

I swear that woman is a witch or some shit. Either that or she has hidden cameras somewhere.

Refusing to give in, I keep my mouth firmly shut, not that it makes any difference because her laughter turns even louder.
