But that need to get away from it all was gone now that she was here.

“Another time.”

I pull open the door, waiting for her and Henry to enter, but she surprises me by taking my hand in hers as she passes me by.

Together we climb to our floor. She lets go of my hand and pulls out her key.

I shift my weight from one foot to the other, rethinking my stance on that run, when she suddenly turns around and smiles at me.

“You coming?”

CHAPTERTHIRTY

PENELOPE

The professor dismisses us after giving us instructions on the chapters to read at home before our next class.

“I’m glad this is over,” Enrique comments.

“Tell me about it.”

Closing my laptop, I slide it into my bag, making sure I gathered all of my belongings before calling Henry. He slides from under my seat and straight into his harness. Bending down, I slip the strap in place, double-checking it’s secure, just as the floorboard creaks behind me.

“Will you move it already?” Lilian snaps, her irritated tone causing chills to pepper my skin. “Some of us have places to be.”

Getting to my feet, I turn to face her. “It’s just two seconds. I hardly think you’ll be late.”

I didn’t know what her issue with me was, but lately, her mean streak was worse than usual, and it’s just my luck that we have more classes together this year than ever before.

“Whatever, just get out of my way,” she mutters, her shoulder bumping into mine as she moves past me so hard I stumble back.

Fingers wrap around my forearm right as I place my hand against Henry’s back.

“Somebody is cranky.”

“I don’t understand what her problem is.”

“She’s just jealous.”

Why?

I didn’t see it. What reason did she have to be jealous of me? She didn’t even like me. I couldn’t figure out what I had that she would want so badly to hate me over it.

“Just ignore her. Do you have time to grab a coffee?” Enrique asks as we walk together out of our class. “I feel like I hardly get to see you this year.”

“It’s been a few crazy weeks.”

Crazy barely begins to cover it. Between attacking the bucket list, my schoolwork, volunteering at the shelter, and spending every moment I have with Sebastian, I don’t remember the last time I had a moment to just breathe, and with midterms approaching, I didn’t see how that would change anytime soon.

“Maybe ju—”

“Birdy.”

Goosebumps spread over my skin, and I halt at the sound of Sebastian’s husky voice coming from behind me. Pulling Henry to a stop, I turn around, listening for any sign of him.

And then there he is, that pine and sandalwood scent the first thing I notice as he moves closer, his arms cupping my cheeks as he bends down and presses his mouth over mine.

Damn, I missed this.
