A few months ago, meaning probably after his tour was canceled. Did he OD? Was that the reason behind everything? It would make sense. But how is it that nobody knew? How is it that nobody realized how much he needed help?

“So don’t you dare sell yourself short.”

“I’m not; I’m just…”

Just then, the food arrives, and I fall silent until the waitress leaves once again. But not before flirting with Sebastian some more. Like seriously? I’m sittingright here.

“Jealousy looks good on you,” Sebastian teases after the woman leaves. Finally.

“I’m not jealous, just irritated that she didn’t even bother asking me for my order.”

“Not even a little bit?”

Turning back to Sebastian, I roll my eyes. “Maybe just a tiny bit.”

“You really know how to make a man feel loved. Here, I ordered these for you.”

My heart does a little flip at his choice of words, and my stomach twists.

Love.

Did I love him? I liked being with him. Sebastian made me laugh. He made me feel special and cared for. But everything about us felt so new, so raw.

A warm ceramic touches my hand, and I instinctively wrap my fingers around it.

“I ordered you fries. I know you said you don’t want to eat, but you always sneak fries.”

My cheeks heat. “That’s not…”

“You ate them from my plate the last three times we ate together.”

He was right, dammit.

“So, I like fries.”

Grabbing one, I pop it into my mouth, the mix of crunchy potato, salt, and spices calming some of my nerves.

“That’s why I ordered you some.”

Thankfully Sebastian changes the subject as we eat. He got a burger for himself with a side of cheese fries. I listen to him talk about his classes, and we discuss the show we’ve been watching since I introduced him to the audio description setting on my TV.

“I think I’m going to do it,” I say once we’re done eating. I brush my palms against the sides of my legs. They’re slightly damp with sweat.

“Okay.”

Time passes in silence, but neither of us moves.

“I will,” I insist, but it’s like my butt is glued to the chair.

“Take your time. It’s not like we have a curfew.”

I let out a nervous chuckle. “Tell that to Henry.”

The poor pup was so disappointed when we left him back at the apartment. Again.

“Is this your subtle way of telling me I should get a car?”

“We could have ordered an Uber.”
