“But where is fun in that? You know you like to ride my bike.”

He was right about that one. There was just something about riding the bike that made the excitement course through me. The way our bodies were pressed together. The feeling of freedom as the machine started to speed down the road. The bite of the air on my skin.

It was exhilarating, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

“You make me want things I never did before.”

“Good,” Sebastian raises his hand, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “Because you make me want things I never did before, too, Birdy.”

I could hardly believe that. My life was completely mundane, to the point it was boring. He was the exciting one. The one who pushed me to try different things. The one who made me want to be reckless and free. Somebody who could potentially make him want to stay.

The realization hits me out of nowhere, but before I have the chance to process it, Sebastian drops his hand. “C’mon, let’s go.”

I blink a few times, surprised by the sudden change. “What?”

Sebastian’s fingers wrap around mine as he helps me to my feet and walks us through the bar. The more we walk, the louder the singing becomes, and shit, I know exactly where we’re going. Toward the stage.

“Name?” an unfamiliar male voice asks, sounding completely bored.

“Penelope and Bash.”

“What are you doing?” I hiss so only he can hear me.

He can’t be serious about this. Giving them his name? What if somebody recognizes him? What if somebody films us and posts it online and…

“Pick out a song. You’ll be going on in thirty,” the guy says.

Sebastian’s grip on me tightens. “Do you have any preferences?”

“You can’t sing!”

“Of course I can,” Sebastian says nonchalantly. “I guess I’ll just have to pick instead.”

“I should have never agreed to this in the first place.”

I’ll never forgive myself if somebody discovers where he’s been because of me.

Sebastian turns to me and places his hands on my shoulders. “You put this on your list for a reason, Penelope. Don’t let the fear stop you from doing what you love.”

The song comes to an end, and the crowd applauds politely. The girl was doing quite a good cover of Billie Eilish’sbad guy.

“Steps,” Sebastian warns as he gently tugs me toward the stage, and it feels like all eyes in the room are suddenly on me.

“Sebastian…”

“You can do this.” Sebastian places something in my hand.A microphone.“Sing with me, Birdy.”

“But I don’t even know what song you picked!”

“Oh, you’ll know.”

I don’t miss the knowing smirk in his voice.

I’ll know? How would I know? Then it hits me. He wouldn’t… Would he? I don’t think he was crazy enough to do it, but what the hell do I know? I didn’t think he was crazy enough to go to a karaoke bar and get up on stage, and yet here we are. He knew that I was a fan, so maybe…

Soft music starts to play, and it takes me a few seconds until recognition hits me. My fingers dig into his skin as a smile slowly spreads over my face. “Taylor Swift?” I shake my head, shocked by the selection. “You picked Taylor Swift for us to sing?”

And not just any song.
