Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince.

If there was a song that described the two of us, it would be this one.

“So what if I did? Now sing.”

Still shaking my head, I do exactly as he says.

At first, my voice is shaky, but after the first few lines, I can feel myself grow more confident. I focus on hitting the notes and the feeling of Sebastian’s fingers wrapped around mine. Then, when the bridge hits, Sebastian’s voice joins mine, and it’s almost magical.

Everything else falls into the background, and it’s just him and me, our voices working in perfect harmony like we’ve done this a thousand times before.

By the time the song ends, a broad smile spreads over my mouth.

Rising on the tips of my toes, I wrap my arms around his shoulders and bury my face in the crook of his neck as the applause spreads over the room.

“Thank you for doing this with me.”

“Any time, Birdy.” His mouth presses against my temple, and I can feel that sweet ache growing inside my chest, making it hard to breathe. “Any time.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

PENELOPE

I let out a long yawn. The third one in as many minutes.

“What’s up with you?” Grace asks. “A long night?”

“Just tired,” I mutter, taking a sip of my coffee. I really needed the caffeine boost since I almost fell asleep in my earlier class today.

“Mhmm…”

A soft gasp from my left draws my attention. “It can’t be him, right?” a female voice whispers, and I can feel prickles of awareness run down my spine.

Him?

Jade nudges me with her elbow, drawing my attention back to our conversation. “What were you up to last night?”

“Hmm?” I ask absentmindedly, still listening intently to the conversation, but the girl must have left because I can’t hear her any longer.

“I stopped by your place because Prescott had a study group, but you weren’t there. Or maybe you were, but were just otherwise busy?”

My cheeks flame at the obvious innuendo in her voice.

“Oh, stop it,” I chastise. “We went out, that’s all.”

“Out, as in on a date?”

I remember asking Sebastian this exact question and the cheeky answer he gave me. “Depending on who you ask.”

No matter what Sebastian said, last night felt like a date. And not just last night, either.

“What do you mean? Where did he take you?” this comes from Grace.

“A karaoke bar.”

“A karaoke bar?” the disappointment in Jade’s voice is obvious. “I would have thought he would have splurged on something better.”

But that’s the point. I didn’t want something better. I didn’t want superstar Sebastian. I wanted him just like he was yesterday—sweet, real, mine.
