Last night was perfect, just the way it was. Sebastian helped me conquer one of my fears. The guy even stood on stage with me, although I know he’s been trying to lay low. And yet, he did it so I didn’t have to do it on my own.

“That’s why he doesn’t count it as a date, I guess, but to me, it was perfect,” I admit, warmth spreading through my belly.

He was perfect.

There is a beat of silence before Jade whispers, “You like him. Like reallylikehim.”

“I do,” I whisper, my teeth sinking into my lower lip as I duck my head.

I really, really liked him.

More than that, honestly.

The more time passes, the more I realize he and I are inevitable. I was falling for the man, and I didn’t know how to feel about it. He had heartbreak written all over him, but I was willing to risk it for this moment of knowing the real him.

Even if it was only temporary.

My watch buzzes with an alarm.

“I need to get to class,” I silence the alarm and get to my feet. “Talk to you girls later?”

We say our goodbyes, and Henry and I walk out of the café. A chill passes through me from the bite of the cold October air on my cheeks. Fall was in full swing, and before I knew it, winter would be here. It was something that I wasn’t looking forward to. Not only because I hated the damn cold, but it made navigating campus that more difficult, even with Henry’s help. The streets were slippery, and in addition to all the other obstacles on the road, we had to deal with piles of snow everywhere.

I can hear more hushed whispers on my way to class, and I swear I can feel eyes on me as I walk. And it’s not the usual ‘look at that blind girl’ interest that I was used to getting. No, this was different.

Campus is usually buzzing with activities, but today, something feels off. I can’t exactly pinpoint what. But something about the whole situation makes me wary.

I let out a sigh of relief once I enter the classroom, but then the murmurs slowly start to die down around me, and those curious eyes are on me.

“Is that her?” somebody asks, just loud enough so I can decipher the words.

A prickle of unease spreads down my spine.

Her?My fingers tighten around the harness as I shift my weight from one foot to the other. What the hell is going on here?

“Henry, seat.”

We start moving, but that uncomfortable feeling only grows more intense as the hushed, secretive chatter resumes around me.

“Hey, Penny,” Enrique greets me as I slide into the open seat next to him.

“Hi,” I lean down to unhook Henry’s harness. “Under, Henry.”

His furry body brushes against mine as he slides under the desk.

Tucking a runaway strand of hair behind my ear, I turn toward Enrique. “Is something going on that I’m missing? Everybody’s acting weird.”

“Weird, how?”

“I don’t know, just… weird.”

“Everybody looks pretty normal to me. Then again, I’ve been living off energy drinks for the past two days, so I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask that.”

“Energy drinks?” My brows pull together just as I hear again that sharp intake of breath coming from behind me.Seriously, what is going on with these people?“What have you been doing?”

“I was…”

“Birdy.”
