“Fine,” I grumble, sliding my hand to the small of her back. “I’ll walk you out.”

Penelope nods, her attention going to Seraphina, who’s watching us with curious eyes. “It was nice meeting you.”

“You too. I’ll see you around.” There is a promise in her voice that I’m not sure I quite like hearing. With a warning look in her direction, I walk Penelope to the door, making sure the coast is clear before I allow her to exit the apartment.

“You don’t really think they’d come in here, do you?” Penelope asks as she pulls out her key, the worry evident in her voice.

I didn’t want her to worry, but I also couldn’t bring myself to lie about this.

“I wouldn’t put it past them.”

Penelope grazes her teeth over her lower lip, the tension radiating off of her.

And fuck, I hated this.

That’s why I wanted to keep my head low. So we wouldn’t need to deal with the craziness that’s my life.

I step closer, sliding my hand under her chin and turning her to look at me. “I need you to be careful.”

Penelope lets her lip pop. “Me? You’re the one they’re interested in. Not me.”

That’s where she was wrong. They had her photos, and while some more serious reporters might brush it off, paparazzi would stop at nothing until they found out everything they could about her.”

“Just… promise me.”

Penelope rolls her eyes. “Fine, I promise I’ll be careful. I’ll see you tomorrow?”

With a smile, she takes a step back, but I pull her to me, my hand going to her nape as I pull her in for a hard kiss.

“Tomorrow,” I whisper a silent promise.

I didn’t like the fact that she wanted to stay away, but I could understand how this was too much too soon. However, there is no way I’ll let her go so easily. We might belong to two different worlds, but if I learned anything in the last year, it’s that fame means jack shit if you don’t have the right people around you.

I wait to hear the lock turning in Penelope’s door. With one final glance at the stairs, I go back into my apartment to find Seraphina waiting for me in the armchair where I left her, her phone in hand. She looks up when she hears me coming, and from the stoic look on her face, I know I won’t like what she has to say one bit.

“What?” I bark. Might as well get this over with.

“More articles came out.” There is a pregnant pause. “With new photos.”

“How bad?”

“It’s… messy.”

Walking toward her, I grab her phone out of her hand and glance at the photo they snapped earlier today as we were leaving class. The look of surprise is evident on my face, Penelope’s slender hand clasped tightly in mine.

Gritting my teeth, I slide lower, reading the title of the same article.

Who’s Bash Black’s secret new girlfriend?

“Fuck.” Throwing the phone on the couch, I run my fingers through my hair, tugging at the strands. “They work fast.”

Seraphina leans forward, her elbows leaning against her knees. “What are you going to do?”

What could I do?

Nothing really. That was the really fucked up part. Campus was public property. I couldn’t have them kicked out just because. No matter how much I wanted to.

I squeeze my hands into fists, my nails digging into my skin as the rage slowly boils inside of me.
