“Maybe you should…” Grace starts, but Jade interrupts her.

“We have to tell her,” Jade says sharply. “It’s not like she can see it for herself.”

I turn toward Jade, my stomach twisting with unease. “See what?”

What the hell is going on?

Jade’s hand covers mine on the table, but she doesn’t miss a beat as she says: “There’s a girl with Sebastian. They’re talking outside. Maybe it’s nothing but…”

“Oh…” I lean back, feeling my body relax slightly. “That’s probably Seraphina.”

“Seraphina?” Grace asks, clearly confused.

“His friend,” I shrug. “She saw the article and decided to come here to check in on him.”

“Friend,” Jade scoffs. “They seem to be pretty cozy for friends. You don’t mind her being there?”

Do I mind?

“Not really,” I admit.

Yes, I remember the stories from a few years ago about Seraphina and Sebastian, speculations there was something more going on between them, and from what I’ve read, I know that Seraphina is a gorgeous woman. Usually, I might have been insecure about the whole thing, but I wasn’t after witnessing their conversation yesterday. They were bickering like I’d have with Kate or Emmett, more like siblings than lovers, so I didn’t mind leaving them to it.

Besides, I needed some time to think.

Could I go with him?

Or, more importantly, could I let him go?

Just the idea of it had fear rising inside me as dread pooled inside my belly. It wasn’t like he wouldn’t be coming back. Then why did it feel like if I let him go, I would lose him for good?

I wasn’t ready.

I knew that this thing between us could never last, but it was way too soon. I wasn’t ready to let go of him. Not yet.

We didn’t get enough time.

And a part of me worried nothing would ever be enough. Not when it comes to Sebastian.

“Shit, I need to get to class,” Rei says, snapping me out of my musings.

“Wait, I’ll go with you. I promised Mason I’d meet him in the library after breakfast so we could study together. See you guys later?”

We say our goodbyes, and the girls scurry off.

“You sure you’re okay?” Jade asks once we’re alone.

“Yeah, it’s just a lot to process. Can we change the subject?”

“Sure. I actually have a class soon, but I wanted to let you know I edited that day in a life vlog, so you can post it when you’re ready.”

“Thanks, Jade. You’re a lifesaver.”

“Sure thing. This is actually so much fun, and I love playing around with video in addition to photography. I was even thinking of maybe taking some classes about video editing.”

“You should totally do it. That would be another thing to add to your resume.”

Not that she needed more. As a junior in college, her photos have already been displayed in a gallery in Boston, and the owner asked her for a few more pieces since then. Obviously, I couldn’t see them, but our friends did their best to describe them to me. Last year, while she was fighting cancer and going through chemo, she decided to commemorate every step of her journey with self-portraits, and it brought more than one person to tears during the opening night at the gallery.
