“There is that. I don’t think I’ll ever love it as much as photography, though, but it’ll give me an edge.”

“As if you need an edge.”

Jade chuckles, “You never—”

“Penelope?”

My back stiffens at the sound of my name. After the last couple of days, it’s an instinctual reaction, and it takes me a moment to place the voice.

“I thought it was you.”

I turn to my left, following the sound of the voice. “Seraphina?”

“It’s me. Sebastian told me this is a good place to grab breakfast, but I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Macy’s is our go-to place,” Jade explains, joining the conversation, and I can hear that note of protectiveness in her voice.

Tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear, I give Jade a pointed look, although I’m clueless if she can actually see it.

“Seraphina, this is my best friend, Jade. Jade, Seraphina.”

“Nice to meet you. Do you girls mind if I join you?”

“Umm… sure?”

I barely manage to voice the agreement before she slips into the empty chair next to me.

“Where’s Sebastian?” Jade asks, suspicion clear in her voice.

“We spotted a reporter, so we parted ways. But he also mentioned a class he needed to get to. I, on the other hand, refuse to skip my breakfast because of a bunch of assholes.”

“Did he? We saw you two talking outsi—”

I extend my leg, but instead of kicking her in the shin like I was hoping to, I kick the chair instead. Pain shoots through my foot and up my leg.

Shit.

“Did you just try to hit me?”

“It was just to remind you that you mentioned a class you have to get to,” the lie slips from my lips easily.

Jade curses loudly, and I can hear her chair scrape as she gets to her feet. “This isn’t over!”

No, I didn’t think it would be, but if it stopped Jade from roasting Seraphina right now, I’d take it.

“Sorry about that. Jade’s protective.”

“That’s fine. You could do much worse than a friend that has your back.”

Didn’t I know? I was lucky to have met Jade and, by extension, Grace and Rei. They’ve been the kind of friends that I always wanted. Somebody who genuinely loved me for me and embraced me with open arms.

“Hello, can I get you something?” the server asks, and I can hear the rattle of dishes as she cleans our table.

“What’s good here?” Seraphina asks, and it takes me a moment to realize she’s talking to me.

“Waffles are great. They also have a nice omelet with veggies.”

“Hmm… let’s go with waffles then. Although, I’m pretty sure my trainer will kill me once I get back, but you only live once, no?”
