Not again.

But it was.

And there was nothing that I could do to stop it.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR

SEBASTIAN

Me:

Almost done with class. Where are you?

I stare at the screen, looking at my text thread with Penelope, willing those three little bubbles to appear to let me know she’s texting me, but nothing happens.

It’s been just a few hours since I last saw her, and I was already getting anxious. I know she asked for time to think about my offer, and I could give that to her, but there was no way I could stay away from her.

Swallowing my groan, I try to focus my attention on the class, but my mind keeps going back to my phone. I didn’t want to bring it with me, but what I wanted even less was to risk Penelope calling me in case she needed me and me not having my phone.

Stupid paparazzi were still on campus. They cornered me this morning, snapping photos and throwing questions at me, which I ignored. It must be a slow day in Hollywood when they thought a guy going to college was newsworthy.

I knew there was nothing that I could do about it. Not if they didn’t cross the line and give me a reason to call the police. As much as I wished that was the case, I also dreaded it.

Just a little while longer. Just hold on a little while longer, and they’ll find a new thing to focus on.

My screen lights up, and I all but jump toward my phone. A few people give me curious looks, but I ignore them as I open the message. The disappointment slams into me when I notice the name on the screen.

Sera:

You done with class?

Me:

Soon.

Sera:

Have you seen Penelope?

Unease creeps up my spine. Why would Seraphina ask about Penelope? It made no sense.

Me:

No. Why?

Sera:

She was at Macy’s today.

Shit.

Me:

What did you do?

Even before I send the message, I’m already on my feet and stomping toward the back door. I could feel people’s eyes on me and hear their whispers, but they were quickly silenced by the door closing behind me.

Where would she go?
