“—Hanscom Field Terminal.”

That’s the one.

I grab the first dress I put my hands on and pull it over my head, adding a cardigan before grabbing my suitcase and quickly tossing a few outfits inside. I have no idea what I got or if any of it matches, but I don’t have time to lose.

Going into the living room, where I remember leaving the phone, I try to think of any other things I might need.

I find my phone on the counter where I left it last night and pull up my contacts before pressing call.

I nibble at my lip as I wait for the call to connect. What if she doesn’t answer?

“Penelope? What’s up?”

“How fast can you drive?” I ask, my hand clutching around the device.

There is a moment of silence before Jade asks: “How fast do you need me to?”

SEBASTIAN

Pulling out Seraphina’s suitcase and my duffle, I close the trunk of the car and tap it twice. The car drives away, and I can’t help but watch him go, wishing I could be inside instead.

But I’m stuck here.

“You’ll be back in no time,” Seraphina says, patting me on the shoulder.

“Yeah, I know.”

But that’s not the real issue here. I didn’t know how to explain it to her. It felt like I was leaving a piece of me here; all I had left was this void.

I used to think the worst feeling I’d ever have to face was being unable to play or sing, but leaving Penelope behind felt even worse.

This is what she wants.I try to reason. She didn’t choose this lifestyle. She didn’t choose to be plastered all over the media and have people probe into her life. Not just that, people threatened her because she chose to be with me.

That damn box and the nightmare pop back into my mind.

We couldn’t catch a break.

These last few weeks have been incredible. I was starting to feel more like myself. No, not me. Like a better version of the person I used to be. All thanks to Penelope. And now the house of cards was falling apart around me, and there was nothing I could do to save it.

I grip my fingers into a fist, feeling the sting as my nails dig into my skin.

It’s better this way. Whatever happens, she’ll be safe now, right?

“C’mon, lover boy,” Seraphina teases, her hand slipping around my waist. “Let’s go inside.”

Sighing, I pull my guitar higher on my shoulder. “Fine.”

One of the attendants joins us and takes our luggage as we climb the stairs into the jet. A flight attendant waits for us at the entrance, her red lips curved into a welcoming smile. “Mr. Black, Miss Kennedy, it’s so nice to have you on board today.”

My gaze drops to her nametag. “Thanks, Lucy.”

“Feel free to take your seat, and I’ll be with you shortly.”

Walking past her, we enter the main seating area, where ten empty leather seats await. Gently placing my guitar on the floor, I slide into the first beige chair.

“Damn, I love your mother,” Sera sighs happily as she takes the seat opposite me. “That woman has impeccable taste.”
